Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

This position is with the Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence & Security (ARLIS) – a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) under the UMD Vice President for Research (VPR). ARLIS is a growing organization with a start-up atmosphere of independence and autonomy; we are looking for people who thrive in an environment of significant project ownership and responsibility for outcomes.

ARLIS seeks to hire an early to mid-career User Experience (UX) designer and user researcher as a Faculty Specialist (all ranks). Exceptional candidates in all areas related to ARLIS’s current research trajectories will be given serious consideration, particularly those with experience in multiple areas.
You will be part of up to three project teams. Project work at ARLIS focuses on areas to include:
  • Strengthening the interdisciplinary and sociotechnical considerations for the design, development, test, and evaluation of human-machine interfaces.
  • Cognitive support and augmentation of human performance.
  • Simulations that describe data, predict events, and inform an operator’s course of action.
  • Experiments to measure and understand cognitive behaviors relevant to our sponsors.

As a User Experience Engineer and Faculty Specialist, you will collaborate with other team members and stakeholders
  • Assist in qualitative user research for the development of end-user requirements.
  • Assist in collection of physiometric data of experimental participants.
  • Leveraging user requirements gathered in qualitative research to design user interfaces for complex human-machine interactions. This may include technologies such as AR/VR, big data dashboards, or simulations of human behaviors, as examples. This work will include concept development and storyboarding.
  • Documentation of user research and findings.
  • Socialize, explain, and iterate on design concepts with stakeholders to include teammates, users, and sponsors.
  • Collaborate to develop, undertake, and document usability test and evaluation tasks.

This is a full-time professional track faculty position (PTK) at the University of Maryland with benefits. Salary is dependent on experience, qualifications, and hiring level. Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Cognitive Psychology, Social Science, or related field (or equivalent and demonstrable work experience)

Experience:
Two or more years of UX design and/or research experience. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience designing complex solutions for complete digital environments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • A solid grasp of user-centered design (UCD), planning and conducting user research, user testing, A/B testing, rapid prototyping, heuristic analysis, usability and accessibility concerns.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate design processes, ideas, and solutions to teams and clients.
  • Expertise in standard UX software such as Sketch, OmniGraffle, Axure, InVision, UXPin, Balsamiq, Framer, etc.
  • Experience in utilizing UX research tools (Miro, Maze, Typeform, UX Cam, Google Analytics etc)
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and storytelling skills
  • Ability to effectively, efficiently, and independently manage time and effort across two or three active project.

Conditions of Employment:
Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
