Postdoctoral Researcher – People, Health, and Place Lab.

General Notes

This is a one-year position extendable to an additional 6-12-month period, based on hiring date, available funding, and 1st year performance. The position will include a full-time benefits package. Security sensitive; criminal background checks conducted on selected candidate. Hiring decision is contingent upon applicant clearing background requirement. Purpose

The People, Health, and Place Lab is at the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education of The University of Texas at Austin is immediately seeking an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to support the development and dissemination of a variety of research studies centered on the themes of space, place, and health; physical activity; health disparities; urban health; and global health. The postdoctoral researcher will receive direct mentoring by Dr. Deborah Salvo, Associate Professor and People, Health and Place lab director.

Responsibilities

  • Specialized data analysis and management tasks, including: database management and cleaning; geospatial data acquisition, cleaning, processing and analysis; statistical data analysis.
  • Develop and submit new original research manuscripts and conference abstracts.
  • Lead the preparation of project update reports and presentations; and maintain detailed records of work performed, organization of items generated, and development of Manuals of Operating Procedures (MOPs).
  • Support broad audience dissemination activities through non-scientific outlets (web and flyer design, social media communications, etc.).
  • Assist with grant writing to move projects to the next level, as needed. This may include leading literature searches to support the development of new ideas; support the development and submissions of large grants by the lab director (Dr. Salvo) and her team of internal and external collaborators; and the submission of grants as lead or co-lead investigator for mechanisms that allow for it, as available.
  • Provide support for general lab activities, including mentoring other lab members (graduate and undergraduate students), and organize and schedule lab meetings and other project meetings, as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned Ph.D. within the last three years in public health sciences, behavioral sciences/health behavior, epidemiology, urban health, biostatistics, or closely related field.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in the use of ArcGIS
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following statistical software packages: SAS, Stata, R, SPSS
  • Advanced knowledge of epidemiological study designs and analytic approaches (multivariate modeling, multilevel modeling, propensity score matching, interrupted time-series analysis, etc.).
  • Previous experience working in studies assessing the relationship between urban design and planning features and health-related outcomes.
  • Advanced knowledge of the state of the science of physical activity and public health research.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal training at the undergraduate or graduate level in one of the following fields: urban design, urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, or transportation engineering.
  • Formal training at the undergraduate or graduate level in one of the following fields: urban policy, public policy, social policy, health policy, health economics.
  • Past experience working in large urban health studies.
  • Past experience working as part of multi-site, international studies.

Salary Range

$47,500 - $56,500

Working Conditions

  • Office environment
  • A dedicated office workspace (cubicle) in the People, Health and Place Lab, will be provided, and access to shared lab computers.
  • If needed, a dedicated computer (PC, laptop) can be provided, which will remain property of the People, Health and Place lab upon conclusion of the postdoctoral research appointment.
  • Access to all standard university facilities (e.g., library, etc.) will be provided.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
