Postdoctoral Research Associate - Mechanical Engineering
Job Description
In Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE), faculty members, researchers, and students are revolutionizing focus areas in advanced manufacturing, bioengineering, computational engineering, energy and the environment, product design, and robotics. In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Ozdoganlar in Mechanical Engineering. In this role, you will carry out advanced independent and/or directed research to achieve the objectives of the research project. This position will require an in-depth knowledge of a specialized field, process, or subject area, and may involve coordinating and implementing sophisticated research plans, the development of methods of research, testing and data collection, analysis and evaluation, and writing reports.
Burak Ozdoganlar’s research interests include modeling and experimentation of manufacturing processes and systems, specializing in multi-scale (macro/micro/nano-) manufacturing and its applications (including medical and biomedical device fabrication); precision engineering; modeling and experimental approaches in structural dynamics; and modal testing and analysis.
Core responsibilities include:
Fabricating intricate, micro-scale ice structures using the 3D-ICE process. The fabricated structures will mimic the geometry of the vasculature in human tissues.
Using the fabricated ice geometries as sacrificial templates, create gel-based tissue scaffolds with vascular conduits.
Seeding and growing endothelial cells inside the vasculature conduits and fibroblast (or another type) cells in the gel portion. and
Demonstrate that the system can be perfused, and the cells can be sustained for extended periods, e.g., >1-2 weeks.
Assisting in writing proposals in this research area.
Training current PhD students on all the different methods they use.
Other duties as assigned.
