We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Fuel Cycle Chemical Technology (FCCT) Research Group in the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division (NEFCD), Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate (FFESD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

The postdoctoral research will focus on actinide chemistry and its applications. In this position, you will characterize actinide materials utilizing techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic scanning calorimetry (DSC), and laser flash analysis (LFA).  Additionally, you may perform actinide materials synthesis, process chemistry for nuclear fuels, and radiochemical separations. 

 

The FCCT Research Group applies actinide and radiochemistry to a range of missions related to the nuclear fuel cycle.  FCCT is a national leader in radiochemistry and f-element chemistry, including radiochemical separations science, actinide materials synthesis and analysis, uranium processing, and radioactive gas handling.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Perform analysis of actinide materials using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), digital microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic scanning calorimetry (DSC), and laser flash analysis (LFA).
  • Synthesize actinide materials using wet chemical techniques. 
  • Implement experimental approaches, execute the necessary analysis, interpret experimental results.
  • Participate in project planning and execution.
  • Publish innovations and findings in reports, peer-reviewed publications, and at present at conferences.
  • Participate in project reviews, including presenting to internal and external reviewers.
  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and QA requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Nuclear Engineering, Geology, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with solid-phase characterization techniques.
  • Evidence of experience in experimentation, data analysis, and interpretation, documented in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience in handling radioactive materials.
  • Familiarity with the nuclear fuel cycle and related nuclear science topics. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

 

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
