Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Job Description

Position description:

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) invites applications for a tenure-track position in the broadly defined area of Energy Science. This field encompasses the traditional areas of Chemistry (physical, organic, biological, and inorganic chemistry) with an emphasis on fundamental research and applied topics that relate to energy conversion, energy utilization, energy-related materials, including storage, and sustainability.

Penn Chemistry is a collaborative and interactive department. Within the department, the traditional sub-fields of biochemistry, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry serve as a framework from which collaborative, inter-disciplinary experimental and theoretical research is launched. The Department of Chemistry is housed within the School of Arts & Sciences (SAS).  Interdisciplinary research and collaboration are supported across the campus as chemistry faculty routinely collaborate with others in (SAS) as well in the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) and the Perelman School of Medicine, all part of our contiguous green urban campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Penn is home to the Vagelos Institute for Energy Sciences and Technology, a collaboration between SAS and SEAS, and energy research at Penn benefits from close interactions with Penn’s Kleinman Center for Energy Policy and the Penn Center for Science, Sustainability and the Media. We promote and encourage curiosity, intellectual engagement, and discovery among all our students and faculty.

We seek candidates who share our strong commitment to research, teaching and mentoring, and to a scholarly community shaped by values of inclusive excellence. The School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania is committed to cultivating and sustaining a community of students, scholars, researchers, and staff that reflects the diversity of our world. We nurture working and learning environments that are affirming, equitable, and inclusive. Please see our School’s Inclusion and Antiracism Initiatives to learn more about our active priorities: https://www.sas.upenn.edu/2020-inclusion-and-anti-racism-initiatives.

Qualifications include:

  • Broad training in chemical and energy sciences
  • Strong research potential
  • Capacity for teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and mentoring and supporting a diverse student body
  • The ability to direct graduate/undergraduate research
  • Candidates are expected to have completed a PhD and postdoctoral experience by the time of appointment, which is July 1, 2024
  • The successful candidate will be expected to establish an externally funded research program
