Job Description


The Crop Physiology Lab at Virginia Tech’s Tidewater Agricultural Research and Extension Center (TAREC), in Suffolk, VA, is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Associate position. Successful candidate will serve as the Manager of a multi-state project on faba bean winter production in the Mid-Atlantic region. The project includes areas of breeding, phenomics, genomics, agronomics, economics, food science and engineering.

The successful candidate is expected to be creative, self-motivated and independent, and demonstrate evidence of technical writing. The position requires travel frequently to testing sites in Virginia and occasionally North Carolina, Maryland, and Delaware. The position is located at TAREC in Suffolk, VA and will be available for a period of four years (starting in October 2023), with one year offered initially and renewed annually based on the appointee’ s performance (dependent on eligibility).


Required Qualifications

PhD degree at the time of appointment in Agricultural Engineering/Computer Science/Crop & Plant Science/or related field earned no more than four years prior to the effective date of the appointment with a minimum of one year of eligibility remaining.
Ability to independently design (statistically) an experiment, execute field research (from planting to postharvest), and analyze and interpret the results (linear and non-linear models in SAS, R, Python, C/C++, etc.).
Experience with computer vision and machine learning packages.
Experience with remote sensing data processing (e.g. Pix4D, ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.).
Must have working knowledge of agricultural cropping systems (agronomy, physiology, breeding).
Demonstrated technical writing and communication skills (peer-reviewed publications, student competitions, etc.).
Safe driving record required.


Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience with data analytics and visualization applications for breeding selection and phenotyping.
