Job Description

Requisition Id 11686

Overview:

We seek a Senior Instrument Scientist for Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS).

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver ground-breaking solutions to compelling problems in energy and security! The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) are world-leading facilities and the scientific center of a diverse, international, and inclusive neutron scattering community (https://neutrons.ornl.gov).

The position resides in the SANS and Spin Echo Group, part of the Large Scale Structures Section of the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD) at ORNL.

As part of our team, you will support users of the General Purpose SANS (GP-SANS) instrument at the HFIR and participate in local contact duties. Local contact responsibilities include helping users develop SANS experiments and beam time proposals, training users to perform data acquisition and analysis, setting up experiments and ensuring safe operation of the instrument. You will be involved in a variety of developments related to the operation of the instrument, such as upgrades, sample environments and software. You will also be engaged in research programs that include self-directed efforts using small-angle neutron scattering, as well as through collaborations with leading researchers from around the world.  You will provide mentorship to visiting students, postdoctoral research associates and junior staff members.

Successful candidates will be selected via a panel interview process. If this position interests you and you meet the basic qualifications, please apply.

  • A strong record of research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with software development for data analysis and modeling
  • Experience supporting a beamline or beamlines in a neutron or X-ray user facility.
