Arizona State University

Job Description

The Department of Physics in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites applications for a postdoctoral position to work with Professor Simon Foreman on research in cosmology. The primary focus of this position will be on topics relevant to 21cm intensity mapping with the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME, https://chime-experiment.ca ) and upcoming Canadian Hydrogen Observatory and Radio-transient Detector (CHORD, https://www.chord-observatory.ca ), such as the development of novel analysis techniques and theoretical descriptions of expected measurements. However, the successful candidate will also have the freedom to devote part of their research time to other topics in cosmology relevant to the interests of Prof. Foreman and others at ASU, including but not limited to large-scale structure, gravitational lensing, the cosmic microwave background, and connections between cosmological observables and fundamental physics.

The successful candidate with become part of ASU’s Cosmology Initiative, which bridges the Department of Physics and the School of Earth and Space Exploration and spans experimental, observational, computational, and theoretical cosmology. The Cosmology Initiative includes research into the epoch of reionization with low-frequency radio observations (Judd Bowman, Danny Jacobs), the cosmic microwave background (Alexander van Engelen, Philip Mauskopf), theoretical cosmology (Matthew Baumgart, Damien Easson, Cynthia Keeler, Maulik Parikh, Tanmay Vachaspati), and other topics, and the successful candidate will be encouraged to interact with these and other researchers at ASU. This position will benefit from significant computing support, via ASU Research Computing resources and group allocations for the CHIME and CHORD Collaborations on a large external cluster.
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position with an anticipated start date in fall 2024. The initial appointment will be for one year, with an expected renewal for a second-year subject to performance, and a potential renewal for a third-year subject to the availability of funding. • Commitment to working with diverse faculty, staff, students, and communities, and to advancing the ASU Charter.

Desired Qualifications:

• Ability to perform research in cosmology.
• Evidence of effectively communicating research through conference presentations and/or research publications.
• Computing experience in the context of scientific research (e.g. Python, C).
• Research interests complementary to those of Prof. Foreman and his research group
• Demonstrated experience performing scientific research both independently and as part of a team
