Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation's primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

NREL conducts world-class energy research in the public interest. Nestled in the foothills of Golden, Colorado, surrounded by grassland, and convenient to Denver, Boulder, and several suburbs, the NREL campus is a living experiment filled with curious researchers and advanced energy technologies (e.g., improving the nation's electrical grid infrastructure, making it more flexible, reliable, resilient, secure, and sustainable).

We are looking for a researcher with a strong technical background in dynamic and transient simulation of power systems with high levels of inverter-based resources.

The successful candidate will have exposure to energy systems planning and operation problems arising across the NREL mission area. The successful candidate will develop and use novel computer simulation techniques for modeling meshed power system networks with high levels of renewable inverter-based resources and work with NREL computing experts to deploy these techniques on various computing platforms (e.g., PC, HPC, cloud). We seek candidates capable of devising creative solution approaches in the phasor domain, the electromagnetic transient (EMT) domain, and hybrids of the two domains. Candidates must have creative problem-solving skills, a strong interest in cross-disciplinary collaboration, and a passion for the mission and goals of both NREL and EERE. It is envisioned that the successful candidate will likely conduct work at the South Table Mountain Campus and the Flatirons Campus.

Organizationally, this position resides in the Integrated Devices and Systems Group (IDS) of the Power Systems and Engineering Center (PSEC). IDS, PSEC, and NREL are more committed to fostering a creative, curiosity-driven, inclusive workplace, and to supporting and mentoring research staff as they progress from task execution to principal investigator and beyond.


  • Closely collaborate with power system engineers and computer scientists.
  • Develop computer simulation models and techniques for modeling meshed power system networks with high levels of inverter-based resources, include very large systems (hundreds or thousands of buses and sources).
  • Creatively identify new opportunities to accelerate the dynamic solution of large power system.

Author publications in top-tier venues and contribute to proposals to sustain research


Basic Qualifications
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.

* Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Experience with off-the-shelf and custom-built EMT simulators.
  • Experience building and validating EMT and phasor-domain models of power systems.
  • Excellent writing and communications skills
  • Ability to present technical results to a wide audience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in using parallel computing and high-performance computing.
  • Demonstrated experience developing methods to accelerate the simulation of large-scale power systems with many inverter-based resources.
  • Demonstrated experience working in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated experience in collaboratively working on large power system simulations.
  • Previous experience writing research proposals.


Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Postdoctoral Researcher / Annual Salary Range: $71,300 - $117,600

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
