Primary Function of Organizational Unit | The ECU Water Resources Center is housed within the College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University and includes affiliated faculty and students from departments across the campus. The Center undertakes a diverse range of research and community engagement activities to support research and develop equitable partnership opportunities with the community, which are supported by over $14M in external grants. This position will work with an interdisciplinary team of faculty, students, staff, and community partners to develop and coordinate these activities. |
Job Duties | The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research and programs in the area of community engagement and environmental justice. Responsibilities include management of all aspects of a community-based science program supported through a NSF sponsored Coastlines and People project and associated programs supported through the ECU Water Resources Center. The scholar will work with a large team of faculty, students, and community members to develop and implement best practices for community-based science programs that are supported by the literature. Duties include: development, implementation, and assessment of community and student engagement programs; hypothesis development; literature review; collection of data, program assessment, and report writing; supervising of undergraduate, graduate, and community-based research students and interns; overseeing data collection procedures; supervising programmatic activities and experimental procedures; review of data for quality control; supervision of data entry/data analysis; analysis of research hypothesis using descriptive and/or multivariate statistics; and the development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications. Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training. Approximately 20% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to analysis of best practices for community science from the literature and application to the development of effective program models. Approximately 15% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to coordination of program activities with stakeholders (including faculty, students, evaluators, and community members). Approximately 25% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to assessment of programs; documentation of project outcomes in formal and informal publications, reports, and community-oriented communications products. Approximately 40% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate students and community interns, which includes program implementation and community science activities. |
Minimum Education/Experience | English Proficiency Excellent written and oral communication skills PhD in any field relevant to community-based science and environmental justice, including but not limited to Coastal Resource Management, Coastal Science, Environmental Science, Geoscience, Sociology, Education, or other fields. Past experience in the area of environmental justice or community-based science. |
