Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging

Harvard University

Job Description

14-Sep-2023

Faculty of Arts and Sciences

63800BR

Job Summary

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences seeks its next Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EDIB).

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) is the historic heart of Harvard University and its largest academic unit – similar in size and scope to a number of Harvard’s Ivy peer institutions. The home of Harvard’s undergraduate program (Harvard College, founded in 1636) and Harvard’s Ph.D. programs (the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, founded in 1872), the FAS includes 40 academic departments, the Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Division of Continuing Education, and over 30 centers that support a community unparalleled in its academic excellence across the broadest range of liberal arts and science disciplines. It has a ladder faculty of more than 700 members, approximately 7000 undergraduate students, 5000 graduate students across its doctoral programs, and 14000 continuing education students. The FAS community also includes staff, postdoctoral students, researchers, and a global network of alumni.

Together, the FAS seeks to foster an environment of ambition, curiosity, and shared commitment to knowledge and truth that elicits excellence from all members of our community and prepares the next generation of leaders through a transformative educational experience. A bedrock commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging is essential to this goal and therefore to sustaining our long-term academic excellence.

Reporting directly to the Edgerley Family Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Associate Dean of EDIB oversees an office that has three key functions. First, the Office of EDIB partners directly with the Academic Divisions of Science, Arts and Humanities, and Social Science to develop and implement activities to ensure that EDIB are established as core, lived values in FAS academic departments. This includes targeted initiatives addressing specific local needs as identified by faculty and the sharing of learnings and best practices across the three Divisions. Second, it serves as a convener and connector of existing DIB offices across the FAS, particularly at Harvard College, the Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and FAS Human Resources, building collaboration and alignment to further our shared EDIB goals, particularly in support of efforts in our faculty-led departmental communities. Finally, the OEDIB office leads FAS-wide DIB activities, including programming and community-building, as well as tracking and assessment of progress toward FAS and University strategic goals for EDIB.

The successful candidate for the Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging will be a proven systems thinker; skilled in the implementation of structures to support the delivery of learning programs; able to bring expertise to problem-solving both in proactive initiatives and in response to emergent challenging issues; an effective manager and motivator of teams; and an adept connector and collaborator who can lead through influence in a networked, large-scale environment.
