Position Summary
The UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases (IGHID) is recruiting an exceptional candidate for a postdoctoral research fellowship in malaria molecular epidemiology. The fellow will join a dynamic group of investigators in the Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Ecology Lab (IDEEL; www.ideelresearch.org) who are conducting translational research projects on a range of pathogens across sites in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The fellow’s primary role will be to lead malaria molecular surveillance activities in Africa. Specifically, the fellow will coordinate parasite sequencing activities and help launch sample and data collection for a new project in Ethiopia and help identify opportunities for translation of methods across IDEEL projects in multiple African settings. The fellow will perform both wet lab experiments and computational analyses. The genotyping platform developed will be directly applied to field samples collected from a cohort study to monitor drug-resistance mutations. The position will involve regular interaction with collaborators at UNC and in Ethiopia and may involve international travel. The fellow will also have opportunities to participate in IDEEL’s other active projects. The fellow can expect to develop new laboratory and bioinformatic skills, to conduct meaningful translational research, and to have opportunities for authorship and career development.
