Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Gillings School’s Department of Nutrition is a global leader in research and training. We are the only nutrition department in the United States situated in both a school of public health and a school of medicine. We engage in innovative work that capitalizes on both these schools’ approaches to health, and thus our department has an unusual breadth of scientific and policy approaches. Our faculty expertise spans from cell to society and moves from discovery to delivery. Our faculty and students work throughout North Carolina and reach populations in China, India, Malawi, Spain and the Philippines, to name a few.
Position Summary
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be expected to provide oversight of the study to assist in day-to-day study functions such as recruiting, screening, scheduling, and conducting assessments. These assessments generally involve food intake, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), interviews, questionnaires, and computer tasks. This position will also perform data processing and analyses and be responsible for ensuring that IRB approved guidelines and progress reports are met and maintained, as well as ensuring the accurate and consistent collection of data, as outlined in study protocols. The Postdoc will also be able to generate and assist with the write-up of scientific articles from projects he/she is highly involved in.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Candidates must have a minimum of a PhD in a social science or science related field (preferably in nutrition, neuroscience, or psychology) and at least two years of research experience beyond unpaid research assistantship
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience with neuroimaging assessments and analyses (FSL, SPM) and computer (Python, MATLAB) and statistical (R, SAS) programing is needed. Candidates must be highly motivated and organized, have excellent interpersonal skills, and be able to work independently in a fast paced research setting.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience in clinical settings (e.g., phlebotomy) and/or highly preferred but not a prerequisite. Candidates who are not yet proficient with the above programming languages should feel comfortable learning technical aspects of programming, data management, and analysis. NIBL primarily uses OSX platform. Experience working with a range of populations including adolescents, high-risk individuals (i.e., women during pregnancy, ethnic minority populations), and adult community samples – or a desire to learn about doing so – is also highly valued.
