Job Description


The Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia invites applications for a Research Scientist, who is excited about the opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative research environment.   This position will be in the lab of Professor Cliff Stains.

The Research Scientist will work as part of a team of scientists to design and synthesize small molecule near-infrared dyes for imaging and cancer-cell activated drug delivery applications. Research duties will include small molecule dye synthesis, purification, and characterization. Resopnsibilities will also include evaluation of probes in vitro and in mammalian cell culture using fluorescence microscopy as well as mentoring of students and general managerial duties for the lab. The Research Scientist will publish their findings in high impact, peer-reviewed journals and be co-inventors on patents related to their work.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or a related discipline is required by the appointment start date. Significanct, relevant experience in research, mentoring, and general lab management following the PhD is highly desirable. The candidate must have effective oral and written communication skills.  The candidate must have advanced knowledge of small molecule dye synthesis and fluorescence microscopy.  The candidate is also expected to have expertise in structural characterization of small molecules.  The successful candidate is also expected to help mentor undergraduates and graduate students in the laboratory.
