Summary

Under general direction, use slide scanning instruments to generate digital images of standard pathology tissue sections, keeping track of slide scan request orders, prioritizing as necessary.  Assists with receiving and reconciling specimens for order entry, including rejection of specimens (when applicable).  Maintain and stock supplies/inventory, biohazard, and chemical waste, including collection and proper disposal.  Operate, maintain, troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance for lab instrumentation, including maintaining equipment maintenance records.

Responsibilities*

  • Operate slide scanning instruments, including:
  • Receive and reconcile specimens for order entry, including rejection of specimens (when applicable)
  • Perform order entry of specimens into the laboratory information system
  • Perform problem solving of specimens, including extensive phone triage
  • Maintain QC logs for problem cases
  • Prepare cases for grossing/make cassettes
  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance for lab instrumentation, including maintaining equipment maintenance records
  • Maintain an inventory of chemicals used in the laboratory, including maintaining a manifest, and appropriate storage and labeling
  • File department assets as needed
  • Package specimens and slides for transport
  • Track assets in Pathology tracking system
  • Manage biohazard and chemical waste, including collection and proper disposal
  • Assist with the orientation and training of the other employees as requested

Required Qualifications*

  • High school degree in related field or equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience
  • Excellent communication skills

Desired Qualifications*

  • One or more years college instruction or associates degree or equivalent experience with exposure to biology, anatomy and physiology, or other laboratory related field
  • Demonstrated confidence and ability with computers and software
  • Attention to detail
  • Willing to work in a growing and rapidly changing environment
  • The ability to prioritize tasks under occasional high work volumes without sacrificing accuracy

Additional Information

  • May be contacted off hospital business hours in the event of an emergent event
  • May be requested to work overtime in the event of staff shortage or project timeline
  • May need to lift up to 20 lbs

 

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
