Department Summary
The University of North Texas (UNT) is a Carnegie R1 research university and a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution and Minority-Serving Institution with a diverse population of over 42,000 students. The Denton, Texas community combines close proximity to one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country (Dallas-Fort Worth) with an intimate and culturally vibrant college town atmosphere. The UNT Chemistry Department consists of 26 faculty members, including 17 research-active faculty; over 100 graduate students; and approximately 170 undergraduate chemistry majors. The department is in a growth phase, having hired an endowed Welch Chair in Chemistry and five Assistant Professors in the past three years, and with plans to hire up to five additional tenure-track faculty over the next few years. Our department has a strong culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, with specific strengths in materials chemistry, computational chemistry, and catalysis. New faculty have the opportunity to contribute to these areas, as well as helping to grow a new interdisciplinary emphasis in Chemical Biology within the Chemistry Department and in collaboration with the BioDiscovery Institute (BDI) and other units on campus. Further information about the department may be found at chemistry.unt.edu.
UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.
Position Summary
The UNT Chemistry Department invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the broad area of experimental chemical biology, to begin September 1, 2024. This may encompass one or more specific subfields of chemistry such as bioanalytical chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, biophysical chemistry, and bioinorganic chemistry. Candidates whose research complements or builds upon existing strengths in the department are especially encouraged to apply; the potential to interface with researchers in other academic units, including the BioDiscovery Institute and the Biomedical Engineering Department, will also be considered favorably. The selected individual will interact with faculty, staff and students within the Department of Chemistry and in other disciplines, contributing to a strong tradition of interdisciplinary and collaborative research at UNT. Development of a nationally and internationally visible, funded research program is expected. The new faculty member will have access to substantial research support infrastructure in the Chemistry Department, including staffed NMR, X-ray diffraction, and high-performance computing facilities; a stockroom; and a shared instrumentation laboratory that houses a suite of equipment for chromatographic, spectroscopic, mass spectrometric, gravimetric, and microscopic analysis of samples.
