Radiation Effects in Nuclear Materials - R&D Staff

Job Description

Requisition Id 11609

Overview:

The Radiation Effects and Microstructural Analysis Group (REMAG) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks an R&D Staff Member to focus on the microscopic and mechanistic analyses of irradiated and nonirradiated nuclear materials. This position resides in our the Materials in Extremes (MiE) Section in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at ORNL.

With a legacy of impactful research, REMAG is at the forefront of in the field of radiation effects in materials science. Our team is looking for someone to explore the radiation-induced nanoscale phenomena in conventional and advanced radiation-resistant structural materials and nuclear fuel materials using ORNL's outstanding facilities, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the Low Activation Materials Development and Analysis (LAMDA) Laboratory, and the Irradiated Materials Examination and Testing (IMET) Facility.

Improving our understanding of neutron-irradiation resistance of materials has been a long-standing research goal for us. Your research will involve activities to characterize and evaluate the degraded properties of structural materials, understand microstructural and mechanical mechanisms in damaged materials, and explore damage mitigating means and mechanisms. The work will also involve using multiscale experimental approaches such as high-resolution microstructure analysis, in-situ mechanical testing in electron microscopy, digital image correlation, and macroscopic mechanical testing. You will also have the opportunity to explore new research topics within the nuclear materials field and propose new projects to the US Department of Energy (DOE) and other sponsors.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement experiments to analyze the microstructure evolution and mechanical behavior of structural materials before and after neutron or proton irradiation
  • Conduct microstructural examination on irradiated and nonirradiated alloys using scanning and/or transmission electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction techniques
  • Share research findings through presentations at meetings, conferences, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Write compelling research proposals and engage with current and potential future customers
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by encouraging a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Nuclear Engineering (Materials), or a closely related field
  • At least 5 years of professional and/or postdoctoral experience in physical and/or mechanical metallurgy

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proof of significant research record (i.e., multiple publications and citations) on the mechanical and physical behavior of damaged or irradiated materials
  • Significant experience with the post-irradiation examination of radioactive structural or fuel materials or with analysis of materials behavior in nuclear reactor environments
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the capability to write strong research proposals, reports, and journal articles
  • Initiative to independently propose and run research projects, including the ability to coordinate with collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks on time, and adapt to evolving needs

Special Requirements:

  • Three letters of reference are required and can be uploaded to your profile or emailed directly to PSDrecruit@ornl.gov. Please include the title of the position in the subject line.
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

Benefits at ORNL:

ORNL offers competitive pay and benefits programs to attract and retain hardworking people. The laboratory offers many employee benefits, including medical and retirement plans and flexible work hours, to help you and your family live happy and healthy. Employee amenities such as on-site fitness, banking, and cafeteria facilities are also provided for convenience.

Other benefits include the following: Prescription Drug Plan, Dental Plan, Vision Plan, 401(k) Retirement Plan, Contributory Pension Plan, Life Insurance, Disability Benefits, Generous Vacation and Holidays, Parental Leave, Legal Insurance with Identity Theft Protection, Employee Assistance Plan, Flexible Spending Accounts, Health Savings Accounts, Wellness Programs, Educational Assistance, Relocation Assistance, and Employee Discounts.
