Department Summary
UNT is rapidly expanding its Center for Agile and Adaptive Manufacturing (CAAAM) ( caaam. unt.edu), a State of Texas funded multi-million-dollar initiative with a multi-disciplinaiy focus on further advancing the science and technology of additive manufacturing (AM). CAAAM involves a multi-disciplinary team of researchers from materials science, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, data science, cybersecurity and logistics & supply chain, committed to collaborating on large research projects with an emphasis on additive manufacturing. One of the thrust areas in CAAAM is solid-state metals AM and therefore the center has recently acquired a new state-of-the-art MELD system with a wide range of capabilities, including additive manufacturing, coating applications, component repair, metal joining, and custom metal alloy and metal matrix composite billet and part fabrication.
UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.
Position Summary
The Post-Doctorate Research Associate (PDRA) role is focused on the independent technical delivery of and leadership in the development of projects/activities related to solid-state AM within CAAAM, primarily focusing on the Solid State Metals Additive Manufacturing (SSMAM). The PDRA will work with the faculty across various departments with an inter-disciplinary approach to AM. The primary responsibility of this position is to fully exploit and further develop SSMAM through the MELD technology for alloys such as steels, aluminum-base, nickel-base, titanium-base, as well as metal-matrix composites. The PDRA will be expected to focus on understanding the fundamentals of this solid-state AM process and its influence on micro structure and properties of these alloys. The selected candidate is expected to have a strong background in solid-state alloy processing using friction stir welding (FSW) and/or friction stir processing (FSP), and micro structure-property relationships in these materials. Additionally, the candidate is also expected to have a strong background in physical and mechanical metallurgy of advanced alloys. A background in elasticity, plasticity, computational mechanics, and/or process modeling would be beneficial to the position. The position is also expected to provide technical expertise and support to graduate and undergraduate students, assist/lead preparation of research proposals and scientific/technical papers and presentations. 
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate in materials science and engineering or mechanical engineering or a related discipline with a strong research focus on FSW/FSP based alloy processing/manufacturing. The research background should be evident from the prior high-quality publications.
Preferred Qualifications
Applicants that demonstrate aptitude and experience in interdisciplinary collaborations will be a plus.
