Position Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences (EMES) at UNC-CH advances understanding of the earth and ocean processes that govern our planet, shape diverse ecosystems, sustain life, and drive environmental change. We promote exploration and discovery of the natural world by engaging students in research-based learning at all levels. Our graduates are equipped with the strong science foundation, critical thinking skills, and interdisciplinary perspectives required to tackle current and future environmental and resource challenges. We encourage engaged service that translates knowledge for the public good. We support a welcoming and inclusive environment, foster diverse identities and perspectives, and encourage collaboration with all segments of society.
Position Summary
We seek a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in environmental microbiology, molecular biology, and microbial ecology to work across multiple sponsored projects, the NC Collaboratory Rural Wastewater Project, the WSP/POSD shellfish aquaculture project, and the NC Collaboratory and NCSU Oyster Mortality projects. All of these projects have the need for advanced molecular analysis and data generation that will be conducted by this hire. This postdoc will work on two or more of three different topics including wastewater surveillance, denitrification, dPCR quantification of molecular pathogens, and oyster mortality in shellfish aquaculture. The position is for 12 months, with an additional extension of up to one year possible with the generation of additional funding. The successful candidate will carry out molecular analysis, work with collaborators to generate collaborative reports and presentations, write scientific papers; and presenting research at national and international meetings. If the successful applicant is interested, the position may also involve experience in co-mentorship of undergraduate and/or graduate students, as well as teaching opportunities. The position will be housed in the UNC Noble Lab, in collaboration with the laboratory of Dr. Tal Ben Horin at NCS, which encourages a collaborative and supportive research environment. Diversity and inclusiveness are essential to our campus success, and UNC-CH seeks candidates who share our commitment.
