The Opportunity

UCHealth seeks a talented, innovative physician leader to serve as its next President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UCHealth Medical Group (UCHealthMG). This is an outstanding opportunity to lead a large, top-tier, multi-specialty physician-led group practice owned by UCHealth System. This physician leader will be part of a high-performing, quality-focused senior leadership team in a results-driven, growing healthcare system. The new Chief Executive Officer must lead the vision of "From Health Care to Health" by forging strong relationships with the health system enterprise, UCHealthMG physicians and physician leadership to create an overall entity unparalleled in the United States today.

The CEO will lead the development and implementation of evidence-based practice guidelines and clinical operations across the medical group, including program development, innovative care models, physician recruitment and retention, and a focus on creating a sustainable care delivery model for the future. The CEO will work with system leaders to continue the growth of UCHealthMG clinical services by creating a common culture that fosters physician and staff collaboration and, through this culture, become the physician-led group of choice for the state and region.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding physician leader with a strong record of accomplishment building organizational structure within a complex integrated environment, improving operational performance, building systems and processes to increase efficiency, developing excellent physician relationships and mentoring future leaders for sustained growth. Vital to the President's success will be the ability to develop strong relationships, work well with multiple partners across regional collaborative services and with system leadership to deliver on the organization's vision for UCHealthMG. An M.D./D.O. degree is required as well as completion of a postgraduate medical education in an ACGME approved residency program. An advanced degree in healthcare or a business-related field is strongly desired.

This opportunity is available due to the planned retirement of Michael Randle, M.D. who is retiring in 2023.

UCHealth Medical Group

With a world-class team of over 1,500 physicians and advanced practice professionals (APPs), UCHealthMG is the physician-led medical group serving UCHealth hospitals and clinics along the Front Range of Colorado, providing a full continuum of medical care and the highest level of expertise.

UCHealth clinics, staffed by UCHealthMG physicians and APPs, is an integrated, multi-specialty physician and health system partnership. Physicians who are employed by UCHealth practice at over 50 clinics as well as hospitals along the Front Range of Colorado providing convenient access to the best medical care available in the region. The physicians in the medical group provide a broad range of medical and surgical services.

Poudre Valley Hospital and Medical Center of the Rockies are the integrated hospital service delivery sites in northern Colorado. Memorial Hospital Central and Memorial Hospital North are the integrated hospital delivery sites in southern Colorado.

Together, all of the UCHealth hospitals and physician clinics are focused on providing excellent patient and community health care. With a focus on improving the patient experience by sharing resources and developing standards towards achieving the best clinical outcomes, UCHealthMG is the fastest growing, most comprehensive multi-specialty medical group in Colorado.
Position Summary

The President and Chief Executive Officer is the chief executive and administrative officer of the medical group. The CEO has ultimate responsibility and authority to provide leadership, direction, and administration of all aspects of group's operation and the activities of its related entities to ensure compliance with established goals and objectives and the realization of quality, economical health care services, and other related lines of business, while meeting the directives established by the health system's mission, vision and values statements.

The CEO of UCHealthMG reports to the system President and Chief Executive Officer for UCHealth and the Board of Directors of UCHealthMG.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership to direct the activities of planning, organizing, monitoring, and improving the operations and quality of the respective programs and services, including, but not limited to, physician-owned practices.

 

  • Aligns and integrates UCHealthMG providers with UCHealth's mission and strategic priorities.

 

  • Facilitates, implements, and provides efficient administrative support for existing physician/provider practices, physician/provider recruitment as related to outpatient clinics, new practice start-ups, as well as divestiture activities.

 

  • In partnership with UCHealth system leadership ensures a seamless patient experience, unified processes and care protocols, and consistency across the inpatient, outpatient and the continuum of care.

 

  • Engages physicians in process improvement and the dissemination of best practices across geographic regions.

 

  • Evaluates current operations, policies and processes, identifying opportunities to fortify commonalities and negotiate differences to further advance alignment of clinical operations.

 

  • Promotes and fosters a culture promoting the highest levels of engagement and professional satisfaction.

 

  • Ensures successful financial performance and productivity of business operations.

 

  • Coordinates budget development for all assigned areas including immediate and projected needs of human, material, and financial resources. Assumes accountability for budgets.

 

  • Supervises and coordinates the review process for all new services and major technology acquisitions.

 

  • Monitors all physician employment agreements, professional service agreements for physicians and any contract provisions, updates, and revisions.

 

  • Negotiates and maintains necessary contracts for the provision of ambulatory medical director services, business relationship contracts, and leases in support of the services within respective service area.

 

  • Collaborates with patient care staff, health system administration, medical staff, and support services staff to promote efficiency, effectiveness, and economy of operations. Evaluates effectiveness of change.

 

  • Mentors and develops leaders throughout UCHealthMG.

 

  • Leads and coalesces with the UCHealthMG Board.

 

  • Fosters the recruiting, onboarding and retention of excellent clinicians and clearly communicate UCHealthMG expectations.

 

  • Builds partnerships with external and internal stakeholders to create synergies across the local markets while maintaining alignment in ambulatory clinical operations.

 

  • Ensures the use of advanced analytical tools and dashboards is in place and maintained to access and analyze key trends, utilization, quality and cost data.

 

  • Establishes and promotes effective avenues for two-way communication between leadership, providers, and employees.


Expectations of Leadership - Success Measures

The following goals and objectives have been identified as priorities for the CEO during the first 18 to 24 months in the role. They are not listed in order of significance.

  • Create a culture and group practice structure that is patient centric and is transformational to meet the needs of population health, patient health and wellness. Through this culture and structure become the physician-led group of choice for the state and region.

 

  • Increase patient access across all clinic locations through the improvement of operations and development of efficiencies.

 

  • Along with the UCHealth Executive team, UCHealthMG Board and physicians drive the creation of a vision and strategic plan which preserves and leverages the local alignments, but advances "systemness" and cohesion between the geographically dispersed care sites.

 

  • Establish best practices to rank with the strongest multi-specialty groups on a national scale, with documented productivity, cost containment, utilization, and provider and patient satisfaction.
  • Understand the collaborative relationship with the CU School of Medicine and with UCHealth hospitals and clinics.

 

  • Increase the integration of services across the group, the academic health system and insurance networks.

 

  • Expand the group by growing providers, volume and ability to care for the communities served.

 

  • Through the engagement of UCHealthMG physicians, enhance revenues, control costs, develop new programs, and continuously improve clinical quality, customer service, and overall performance.

 

  • Through the application of evidence-based medicine initiatives, reduce variation in the practice and outcomes between clinical locations and develop, where appropriate, process standards and a universal UCHealth ambulatory experience.

 

  • Grow the patient care base and market share while providing a model for working with healthcare providers in the city and region to improve the health status of the population and manage the rising costs of health care delivery.

 

  • Assess expansion plans for further integration of new practices; continue to advance a unified culture, which reflects the overall strategic goals of the health system.

 

  • Design a physician leadership development strategy effectively supporting the growth of physician leadership throughout UCHealthMG.

 

  • Understand physician compensation models and how they are changing to create an attractive and sustainable compensation model for all specialties and primary care.

 

  • Working with the UCHealthMG Board and the UCHealth executive team, strategically plan for and implement population health tactics.

 

  • Collaborate with hospital and system leadership to develop and implement business strategies across the local markets promoting provider recruitment and growth to drive market share. Develop customized strategies and operational changes for local communities while maintaining a unified direction.

 

  • Create a Best Place to Work environment by encouraging two-way communication, successfully introducing and embracing change, and mentoring the leadership team. This environment will be conducive to harmonious and coordinated effort wherein each employee has the opportunity for self-expression, accountability for his/her performance, job satisfaction, and professional development.


Candidate Qualifications

Education/Certification

  • An M.D. or D.O. from an accredited institution with board certification in specialty.

 

  • Eligible for licensure in the state of Colorado.

 

  • An advanced degree in healthcare or business-related field is highly desirable.


Qualifications, Skills and Traits

  • Sound understanding of and experience operating a large multi-specialty physician group in a competitive market including operations, finances, physician relations, and current knowledge of the trends and challenges in ambulatory care.
  • An understanding of population health management and integrating a large multi-specialty physician group.

 

  • Flexibility and responsiveness to change with consideration of its impact on decision-making and planning.
  • Leadership abilities to recognize the need to adapt style of leadership to abilities and competency of staff and changing situations.
  • Proactive leadership to elicit input from UCHealthMG physicians and health system stakeholders and utilize that input in decision-making processes.

 

  • Outstanding interpersonal, negotiation, verbal and written communication skills. Ability to build consensus among key stakeholders, including physicians, employees, and community leaders within the health system and community. Well-developed presentation skills are required.

 

  • Experienced in evaluating trends in health care and local market conditions to suggest strategies to respond including payers and payer strategies.

 

  • Experienced in developing quality assessment/improvement and high performing teams to ensure that quality patient care is monitored and evaluated.

 

  • Demonstrated commitment to the patient experience by providing opportunities for consumer input, monitoring, evaluation, and feedback and successfully incorporating that feedback into an improved patient experience.
  • Experience coordinating the development of community partnerships that support the strategic plan and the measurement/improvement of overall health status indicators.

 

  • Understands the importance of being focused on patient care and has significant experience and documented success in running a physician-led large group practice.
