Position Information
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of new and existing knowledge in the broad discipline of Biology by maintaining a high-quality faculty who integrate cutting-edge research and student-focused teaching. We are one of the largest academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. We have over 2,800 majors and we enroll over 5,000 undergraduate students in our classes each year. Our average total annual expenditures exceed $24 million, with nearly half of that coming from grant sponsored research. The department is composed of 50 tenure-track faculty, 10 teaching faculty, 8 research faculty, and numerous active adjunct and emeritus faculty. We currently have 50 graduate students, 40 post-docs and employ approximately 60 additional graduate and undergraduate students from across the university to assist in our teaching and research missions. Our mission is supported by an administrative and technical staff of 20, with an additional 25 staff directly supporting research. The Hige Lab studies circuit mechanisms of learning and memory using Drosophila as a model organism. The main research techniques used in our lab include electrophysiology, two-photon imaging and behavior assays. |

Position Summary | The Hige Lab at UNC-Chapel Hill is seeking a postdoc, who will enthusiastically work on neurophysiological study using the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Using this simple model system, our primary goal is to understand how sensory information is flexibly processed and translated into different behaviors depending on the animal’s past experience or current context. We employ multiple physiological techniques including in vivo whole-cell patch-clamp recording, two-photon calcium imaging and behavioral assays. By combining these techniques and the complete connectome information, there are on-going exciting projects. For more details, please visit our website (https://www.higelab.org/). |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | PhD in Biology or closely related field is required. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Successful candidates should have at least one first author paper published in a peer-reviewed journal. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | We welcome applicants with any research background, but the priority will be given to those with neuroscience background. Experience with fruit fly research is NOT required. We rather encourage individuals who worked with other model organisms to apply. Experience with engineering or programming would also be a plus. |
