Job Summary

A Staff Research Associate 1 (SRA 1) position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Ophir Klein in the Program in Craniofacial Biology at UCSF. The SRA's key responsibilities will be to provide assistance for the smooth running of the lab. The main responsibilities are: mouse colony management, wet lab experimental support under the supervision of senior scientists and postdoctoral scholars, as well as general lab maintenance. The laboratory is located at the UCSF Parnassus Heights campus, in the center of San Francisco. UCSF offers an outstanding developmental and stem cell biology community and a supportive working environment.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Orofacial Sciences is a new and exciting academic and clinical enterprise, the role of which is teaching and practicing the diagnosis and treatment of localized and systemic oral diseases and developmental conditions, and advancing knowledge about them. Research in the Department covers a broad spectrum of basic, translational and clinical sciences that complement the clinical activities of the Department.

The Klein Laboratory, in addition to being affiliated with this Department in UCSF School of Dentistry, is also part of the Program in Craniofacial Biology (PCB). The PCB program brings together faculty, research labs and investigators who are interested in the development, function, and regeneration of the craniofacial complex. Researchers in the program study the biology of various stem cells, and how these progenitors differentiate into tissues through highly regulated mechanisms.


Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Basic understanding of Genetics and molecular biology
  • Willingness to work with mice and other rodents
  • Previous experience with basic laboratory skills
  • Excellent organization skill and attention to detail
  • Excellent time and task management skills
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Proficiency with software programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated record of excellent attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in PCR
  • Prior experience in mouse and other rodent handling and genotyping
  • Prior experience in mouse and other rodent colony management
  • Prior experience with RNAscope, RNA in situ hybridization and immunofluorescence
  • Knowledge of UCSF policies and procedures
  • Prior experience in a research laboratory
  • Prior experience with molecular biology
