Position Highlights Steward Observatory (SO) seeks to fill a full time Assistant Research Professor position to support the NIRCam and MIRI teams as well as a number of accepted general observer programs on JWST. The scientific focus will be to assist in awarded programs in the general area of extragalactic astronomy, including studies of lensed galaxies with integral field spectroscopic data, using lensing to explore the low luminosity high-redshift galaxy population, evaluating how the infrared aromatic bands change with environment, and a variety of other areas including those under the NIRCam and MIRI guaranteed time. The positions will be immersed within a rich astrophysical environment. SO is a member of the interdisciplinary Theoretical Astrophysics Program. The new University-wide Research Data Center provides access to high-end, local supercomputing resources (up to ~ 380 TFLOPS) including distributed, shared-memory, and GPU architectures. Observational facilities at SO include the 2x8.4m Large Binocular Telescope, the 6.5m MMT, the twin 6.5m Magellan telescopes, and the 12-m mm-wave and 10-m submm telescopes.

The rank of assistant research professor is the first rung on our career track faculty ranks, above the rank of postdoctoral fellow. These positions will be available to candidates with outstanding qualifications and at least three years of experience in relevant areas of astronomy.

This career-track appointment is not eligible for tenure.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist in awarded programs in the general area of extragalactic astronomy, including studies of lensed galaxies with integral field spectroscopic data.
  • Evaluate how the infrared aromatic bands change with environment.
  • Help analyze NIRCam and NIRSpec observations of very high redshift galaxies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics, Astrophysics, or related field and at least three (3) years of experience in relevant areas of astronomy.
