Paul D. Camp Community College is a small 2-year college in Southeast Virginia. Campuses are located in Franklin and Suffolk. There also is a center in Smithfield. The college offers associate degrees, certificates, and career studies certificates In transfer and career/technical programs; credit and non-credit workforce services and training for businesses and industries; special interest classes for the community; and summer classes for youth through the Regional Workforce Development Center. A dual enrollment program for high school students, online courses, and developmental studies classes are available at the college as well.

Paul D. Camp Community College (Camp) has administered a federally-funded TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program for more than 30 consecutive years. SSS is funded with a yearly itemized budget to serve 180 students at CAMP with the goal of increasing the number of students who successfully reach their educational goals. The SSS program promotes student success through activities that support student retention, improve graduation and transfer rates, and foster a supportive institutional climate. The program provides students with: academic skills and resources, such as tutoring; guidance for students who plan to transfer after completing an associate degree; help with FAFSA and other college processes and requirements; and support for students with disabilities. In addition, SSS offers cultural trips, academic and financial workshops, and grant aid to eligible students. SSS is a key resource for first-generation students, low-income students, and students with disabilities, and its staff are committed to helping these students succeed.
The Program Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Student Support Services program, and managing the SSS grant in accordance with all applicable policies and regulations.

  • Perform job responsibilities to the highest ethical and professional standards, apply best management practices; and adhere to the VCCS Code of Ethics and to the code of ethics established by CAMP Community College.
 
Core Responsibilities specific to this position, including non-routine and/or strategic responsibilities and activities; college, community, and professional services; and professional growth and development:
  • Develop and manage an approved SSS budget in accordance with all applicable policies and regulations, including those pertaining to human resources, procurement, and travel.
  • Hire, onboard, train, supervise, and evaluate SSS staff.
  • Identify program participants and select participants that qualify for acceptance in the program.
  • Provide academic, career, personal and financial aid counseling to program participants, plan cultural activities and provide accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Track and monitor students’ progress and refer students for tutoring.
  • Maintain up-to-date and pertinent grant records.
  • Counsel and coordinate appropriate resources for students identified by Early Alert as being at risk or in danger of failing.
  • Provide reports each semester and yearly for internal use and provide Annual Performance Report (APR), and any other required reports, to the Department of Education.
  • Lead the development and submission of the SSS grant proposal every five years.
  • Serve on college committees as requested and as within grant regulations, perform other duties as assigned.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in counseling, education, human services, student personnel services or related field from an accredited college/university.
  • Experience in TRIO program management implementing Student Support Services, and/or similar programs for first-generation students, low income students, and/or students with disabilities, that promote persistence, academic success, and college completion.
  • Proficiency in budget management, including forecasting needs, allocating sufficient funds to budget categories, monitoring expenditures, and preparing detailed program budget reports.
  • Significant experience working with economically, culturally, and ethnically diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations and requirements for administration of grants and programs.
  • Knowledge of assessment methods for establishing and evaluating program objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use/learn to use various technology applications including word processing, database, presentation, and spreadsheet software.
  • Knowledge of disability law and student rights.
  • Knowledge of financial aid programs and application procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate student’s academic interests and formulate a plan to assist student in achieving their goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate small groups, plan activities, and provide workshops on topics that promote student success.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, leadership, and counseling skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and keep detailed records.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide academic and career advisement to students with physical and learning disabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and resolve conflicts.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
