Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Program Coordinator I for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The Undergraduate Program in Plant Science is housed within the Department of Plant Biology. The program encompasses the Plant Science major with three option tracks (General Research, Horticulture and Turfgrass Industry, and Natural Products). In addition, there are 5 minors and 4 certificate programs based on courses associated with the Plant Science curriculum coursework. Reporting directly to the Program Director, The Department of Plant Biology at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Program Coordinator to assist with active student recruitment, website enhancement and updates, and establishing direct relationships with industry stakeholders for experience-based education internship and job placement opportunities.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Conducts informational sessions for high school students, community college students, parents, and guidance counselors to provide insights into the plant science program.
  • Contributes to academic advising and career guidance, and instructional assistance with specific courses, especially those related to the field of natural products.
  • Develops and implements recruitment strategies for the Plant Science undergraduate program.
  • Requires identifying, cultivating, and maintaining relationships with industries relevant to the field of Plant Science to stay informed about potential applicants and to promote the plant science program.
  • Requires the continuous understanding of the current and future trends in the industries of Plant Natural Products and Horticulture, and will require of knowledge of emerging research areas, advancements in technology, and evolving career opportunities.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree preferably in plant science in the field of natural products or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Requires two years of relevant experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • A strong understanding of plant biology, plant physiology, and related scientific principles is essential.
  • Familiarity with the structure and requirements of undergraduate education programs, including curriculum design, course planning, and academic advising processes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with students, faculty, and staff members.
  • The ability to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner and to actively listen and respond to student and faculty needs and concerns.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills are required, including the ability to manage maintain program databases, track student progress, use and maintain social media platforms and websites.
  • Strong oral presentations skills are also a necessity.
  • A strong understanding and technical skills of working with plant natural products is important to this position.
  • The position will work within the Natural Products Option of the Plant Science Program to enhance, recruit and provide instructional assistance in courses related to the topic.
  • In depth background knowledge of this field is required to develop research internship and job placement opportunities for students engaging in the associated programs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A PhD in Plant Biology or related field, with research experience and knowledge in the field of plant natural products is preferred.

  • Local travel to recruitment events, including high schools, community colleges and college recruitment fairs.
