Summary

A Research Assistant to participate in research of Groves lab into the development of the inner ear and treatments for hearing loss. The successful candidate will coordinate the running of the lab and work alongside a team of 10-12 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and will perform research work that requires planning, completing, and occasionally supervising limited research projects.

The successful candidate will work with a research team of 10-12 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to ensure the smooth running of the research lab. They will work with BCM Purchasing to order and maintain all stocks of laboratory supplies and work with the administrators in the Neuroscience department to allocate purchases and credit card expenses to the appropriate accounts. They will ensure functioning and maintenance of all lab equipment and lab space. They will coordinate onboarding and maintain a log of training of new laboratory personnel. They will design and perform molecular biology and cell biology experiments as well as experiments involving mice. They will document and interpret the results of experiments and report to the lab head.

The successful applicant will work with administrators in the Neuroscience and Genetics department to ensure the smooth running of the laboratory operation, including purchasing and lab maintenance, and attend departmental meetings of senior research personnel.

Job Duties

  • Place orders for all supplies animals and reagents, obtaining quotes, and working with grant administrators to reconcile charges.
  • Maintain organization of lab supplies, equipment, reagents, reservation sheets and stationery.
  • Maintain and organize repair of all lab equipment, including service contracts, and organize cleaning and repair of the lab space and all lab items.
  • Ensure lab members are up to date on required BCM trainings and that our animal and biosafety protocols are up to date.
  • Work with grant managers and departmental administrator in Neuroscience and Molecular and Human Genetics departments to resolve issues with purchasing, grant expenses and travel reimbursements.
  • Assist with and perform experiments involving a colony of 500-800 transgenic mice.
  • Perform molecular biological, histological, imaging and/or cell culture experiments to investigate the development and regeneration of the inner ear, collect data and assist in preparation of manuscripts.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ordering laboratory supplies.
  • Experience working with and breeding mice, and basic knowledge of genetically modified mice.
  • Experience of molecular biology techniques and the equipment used in a molecular biology lab.
  • Analytical thinking and problem solving.
  • Ability to design and execute experiments individually and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
