Position Description:

The Hydrogeology Research Group at the University of Iowa is recruiting a post-doctoral fellow to participate a project focused on developing novel approaches for simulating contaminant transport and fate in sedimentary rock groundwater systems. The project is part of a twenty plus year industry/academic partnership including the contaminated site owner and collaborators from the Morwick G360 Institute for Groundwater Research at the University Guelph and numerical modeling experts at Matrix Solutions. The U Iowa team will be focused on developing and applying an approach for quantifying plume front retardation in fractured sedimentary rock systems. Some specific elements of the project are described below:

  • Lead efforts to fully describe fracture network and rock matrix properties for a sedimentary rock aquifer system utilizing an extensive high-resolution dataset collected from continuous cores, borehole and surface geophysics, multilevel systems, conventional wells, and outcrops.

  • Construct and parameterize model meshes for discrete fracture network-matrix and/or dual porosity models.

  • Work with collaborators on discrete fracture network/matrix model calibration and simulations.

  • Develop novel approaches to visualize and assess simulation results.

  • Produce high quality scientific and technical output including journal articles, conference presentations, and reports.

The initial appointment is for one year, with a second-year renewal contingent on performance and continued funding. The post-doctoral fellow will have access to an exceptionally well instrumented field hydrogeology research site and the associated data collected over the past four decades of conventional and research investigations. Consequently, although the initial focus will be on the plume front retardation project, the post-doctoral fellow will be encouraged to initiate new lines of research as well.

Education Requirement:

  • PhD in Geoscience or Civil/Environmental Engineering or closely related field with research focus on hydrogeology/groundwater modeling.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with discrete fracture network groundwater modeling.

  • Experience developing static fracture network models.

  • Strong programming skills in R and/or Python

  • Proficient in ArcGIS and spatial data analysis.

  • Experience managing data in a SQL-server environment.

  • Record of high-quality publications.

  • Previous work experience in a collaborative research environment.
