Position Summary:


Rutgers University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) is seeking a Physician Specialist II for the New Jersey State Prison Facility located in Trenton, New Jersey. The Physician II is responsible for providing medical services to inmates of the Department of Corrections, which are consistent with community standards of care.
Among the key duties for this position are the following:
  • Reports to the assigned State Prison at designated hours to examine referred patients.
  • Provides emergency care, routine medical care, preventive care, and education to patients.
  • Refers patients to appropriate Physician consults.
  • In conjunction with the site Medical Director, prescribes medications from the formulary for inmate's healthcare needs.
  • Utilizes universal precautions when providing any invasive procedure for diagnostic or routine studies.
  • Participates in development of in-service programs and maintains public relations with other healthcare disciplines.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Experienced in a primary care specialty.
  • Consideration to interview will also be given to applicants who are completing residency training. Documentation of completing approved specialty training must be provided prior to the commencement of employment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Typing, ability to work at varying computer workstations provided by the Department of Corrections in shared office environments. Ability to speak clearly and proficiently is essential, extensive reading, sitting is required. Ability to move from unit to unit within the Correctional facilities. Frequently walks, bends, stretches, pushes and pulls. Intermittent physical exertion when performing job activities. Manual dexterity and mobility for charting (typing). Lifting and pulling up to 50 pounds. The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer). Hearing is essential. Ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
A generally crisis oriented, secure environment working with adults, some who exhibit aggressive, threatening and assaultive behaviors. Physician must be able to function in a stressful environment and relate well to the patients, security staff and health care team members. Handle emergency and crisis situations. Incumbent must exhibit flexibility to work in a variety of settings. May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases. Possibility of cuts, burns, bruises, strains. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Entering and movement within the facility will be controlled by Correctional Officers.

Special Conditions:

  • Must possess own vehicle or have alternative means of transportation from one site to another.
  • Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
  • On call responsibilities.
