Postdoc Research Associate

Iowa State University

Job Description

Position Title:
Postdoc Research Associate

Appointment Type:
Post Doc/Trainee

Job Description:
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

A position for a postdoctoral research associate of the duration of up to two years is available in the Center for Multiphase Flow Research and Education in the College of Engineering at Iowa State University under the guidance of Profs. Rodney O. Fox and Alberto Passalacqua. The candidate's research activity consists of developing and implementing state-of-the-art computational models for polydisperse multiphase flows into CFD simulation codes, and performing verification and validation studies using experimental data from the open literature. Applications of multiphase flow models to large-scale devices will also be undertaken. The candidate will work in a stimulating multidisciplinary environment that deeply values the open sharing of ideas and expertise to succeed in the research project.

Candidates should clearly highlight what type of development they have performed in their application, providing examples and, when appropriate and possible, references to their thesis and other publications.

Candidates should have the ability to write reports and prepare presentations to communicate research results and progress to the project stakeholders effectively and independently. They should also have the ability to meet deadlines and a strong commitment to working in a multidisciplinary research group, openly sharing results, challenges, and difficulties with the team to ensure timely progress and, ultimately, the success of the project.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Chemical, Mechanical Engineering, or other engineering field,
with a focus on computational fluid dynamics and multiphase flows.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong background in models for dispersed multiphase fluid dynamics and numerical methods for computational fluid dynamics, such as finite-volume methods, discretization schemes, and numerical integration.
  • A demonstrated ability to implement complex computational models using the OpenFOAM® CFD toolkit and C++.
  • Having used OpenFOAM to perform computations without implementing models or only having implemented simple sub-models is not sufficient.
  • Experience managing large-scale simulations on high-performance compute clusters, including operative knowledge of queue systems and remote post-processing.
