Position Summary:

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Technician for the Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers University. The position is within a laboratory that conducts fundamental biomedical research investigating molecular mechanisms of growth and morphogenesis. The Laboratory Technician will be performing scientific experiments under the direction of the supervisor or senior scientists within the lab, and also performing administrative and support tasks necessary to effective operation of the lab, such as inventory, ordering, and maintaining laboratory cultures.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• Performs scientific procedures in support of lab research, such as transfection, western blotting, animal dissection, immunostaining, and imaging.
• Performs technical tasks in support of lab research, such as making solutions, autoclaving glassware, and maintaining insect and/or bacterial and tissue cultures for experimental purposes.
• Performs administrative tasks in support of lab research, such as ordering, inventory, maintaining databases and acting as a point of contact for administrative issues.
• Provides routine technical support relative to scientific research work or projects of a laboratory and/or teaching program.
• Collects and completes basic preparation of samples and specimens.
• Performs standard and repetitive physical, chemical, and biological tests on materials, substances, and/or living subjects.
• Prepares media, substances, solutions, and reagents and performs related duties as required.

Minimum Education and Experience:

• High school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s).
• One year of research study experience.
• An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

• Occasionally stoops and bends.
• Occasionally reaches and grasps with arms and hands.
• Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
• Work involves exposure to microbial organisms (BSL 1 only), Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies), and tissue culture cell lines.
• Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
• Able to lift 30lbs.
• Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.
