Summary of Position

Under general supervision of designated supervisor, perform the work requiring skill in the trade of HVAC for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of HVAC systems. Responsible for providing excellent customer service and producing the highest quality of work and services to multiple technical systems. Provide expertise in the HVAC field for troubleshooting complex issues applying trade knowledge exclusive to those with the highest level of HVAC experience. This position may perform duties related to chiller maintenance, complex dining refrigeration or highly restricted Research constant temperature control systems. All HVAC Mechanics are expected to act as department leaders to mentor apprentices and share specific knowledge with others in the field of HVAC maintenance.

UNH Facilities is a 24/7/365 operation and has responsibilities related to campus safety and emergency response. Due to the nature of our business, employees may be asked to flex schedules and/or respond to requests outside of normal working hours in order to meet the demands of the university. This may include early morning, evening, weekend, and holiday work as needed.

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Valid motor vehicle operator’s license and DOT medical card (if applicable based on assigned vehicle weight).
3. Completion of Two Year HVAC certification training
4. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Universal Technician license.
5. Valid NH Gasfitters License.
6. A combination of professional education, certificates, and experience in HVAC equal to 6 years, desirable certifications include:
- HVAC Electrical Pro Troubleshooting/ HVAC Electrical Troubleshooting certificate from Carrier or Trane
- HVAC Mechanical Pro Troubleshooting/Commercial Service 1 from Carrier or Trane.
- Certifications or related experience in the following disciplines to qualify for positions within outlined zones. OPS A. – Certificates or equivalent work experience on environmental constant temperature research boxes and commercial HVAC in an educational/life science-building environment. OPS B. – Certificates or equivalent work experience with commercial refrigeration/rack systems and ammonia systems in an educational/dining/food services environment. OPS C. – Certificates or equivalent work experience on centrifugal, rotary, absorption and reciprocating chillers in an educational environment.
- Experience must include completion of the HVAC Apprentice Program or equivalent external experience.
- At least two years of experience as an HVAC Technician position or equivalent outside experience in a similar position.
7. Ability to read and work from blueprints, technical manuals, charts and schematics.
8. Knowledge of applicable codes/ordinances.
9. Knowledge of methods, tools and hazards of the trade.
10. Ability to inspect equipment, determine malfunction and make necessary repairs.
11. Knowledge and ability to use computers, tablets, smart phones, and software systems to perform work duties.
12. Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including heavy work with exposure to inclement weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
13. Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary.
14. Solid interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and written, to effectively communicate with customers, team members, contractors and supervisors.

Duty/Responsibility

Service calls and customer service: Respond to service calls and requests related to the operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of HVAC systems. Ensure work is of the highest quality while meeting current codes and safety procedures. Trouble-shoot minor and complex HVAC systems and contact the manufacturer’s technical representatives for consultation. Utilize electronic sources of trouble shooting and problem identification software. Provide exceptional customer service by responding to requests in a timely manner (according to priority timeframes), communicating status and following up with customers once work is completed. Using the work management software, maintain accurate records of work completed, materials used, and time expended. Participate in the on-call rotation and respond to emergency situations, including off-hours periods, as needed.

Duty/Responsibility

Preventative maintenance and project work: Perform preventative maintenance activities including periodic visual and hands on inspections/assessments of assigned equipment. Update and maintain records in the work management software. Participate and provide expertise in project management meetings regarding equipment replacement, renovations and new building plans. Complete other HVAC project work as assigned.

Duty/Responsibility

Leadership and mentorship to the Facilities division: Participate, support and demonstrate Facilities Forward concepts which contribute to a positive work culture. Demonstrate leadership qualities during work activities. Mentor, develop and train apprentices and new employees. Oversee and provide feedback about contractors working on campus in the HVAC field as needed.

Duty/Responsibility

Safety and training: Follow all refrigerant recovery and gas codes and other recognized policies/procedures, techniques and safety precautions in the performance of duties. Keep current on all required safety trainings, code license updates, and any certifications required. Continuously seek out professional development opportunities that will benefit the University and technical skills to stay current and knowledgeable of best practices, future trends and technologies.
