Job Summary

The Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) position will support survey and interview administration for the studies of the Principal Investigator (PI), and Project Director (PD) in a clinic-based research program that focuses on improving care and treatment for underserved people living with HIV (PLH). The site of the research is Ward 86 at San Francisco General Hospital, one of the oldest and largest HIV clinics in the country, and the safety-net HIV clinic for the city and county of San Francisco.

The CRC will be working in a publicly funded HIV clinic that serves many diverse and often marginalized urban populations and will need to apply a warm and non-judgmental manner and consistently demonstrate interpersonal tact, discretion, and sensitivity when interacting with clinic patients and providers. Requires to adherence to research protocols with an emphasis on organizational skills and attention to detail. The CRC will meet regularly with the principal investigator and project director for the studies to ensure study milestones are met.

One study is a new multi-site study to develop, implement, and evaluate a low-barrier drop-in/mobile care for people living with HIV (PLH) who are not engaged in care and may be experiencing homelessness, substance use, and mental illness. Responsible for working with providers to recruit and enroll participants according to approved eligibility criteria, obtaining informed consent, administering structured interviews according to study timelines, engaging participants to ensure retention in the study and documentation of all study procedures.

Another study that has been ongoing for over twenty years is the CFAR Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS), a National Institutes of Health (NIH) -funded cohort of clinic cohorts consisting of ten academic HIV clinics across the United States that draws on electronic medical record data, patient-reported outcomes, and specimens. The Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs) component of CNICS involves a health assessment administered to clinic patients approximately every four months.

The CRC will be responsible for identifying eligible patients in the clinic, administering the health assessment on an iPad, and delivering results to the patient’s provider to aid with clinical care in real time. The CRC will also maintain a monthly report of eligible patients present in clinic, approached, declined/accepted, and surveys completed in order to troubleshoot reasons for refusal and non-completion. May also conduct chart reviews for the CNICS data manager to help resolve discrepancies or gather more information on electronic medical record data.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

The Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is an internationally recognized global leader in clinical care, research, and education. Required Qualifications

• HS graduation and sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities; and/or equivalent experience/training
• Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Attention to detail; strong interpersonal skills; excellent, effective verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with subjects, team members, other departments, and outside institutions; and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while working with a diverse subject population
• Ability to work well independently, complete projects in a timely manner, and prioritize multiple projects to ensure the completion of essential tasks by deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual in Spanish and English
• BA/BS degree
• One year of experience in survey research that includes sensitive content, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• One year of volunteer or professional experience working in a clinic setting or equivalent e.g., community non-profit and interacting with patients / clients and their health care providers
• Understanding of patient population to create rapport and a relationship, while also giving insight to what is realistic and appropriate for patient participation
• Experience working with HIV-infected individuals in a service or research capacity
• Experience working with electronic medical records
• Ability to understand priorities in clinical research
• Willingness and ability to strictly follow approved study protocols and document all study activities
• Highly organized, able to multi-task, and demonstrated success working in a fast-paced environment
• Prior experience successfully establishing rapport with health care providers and staff
• Prior experience working on multisite studies
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Record of excellent attendance and reliability
• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality
• A positive attitude and a sense of humor
• Fluency in the usage of Institutional Review Board (IRB) online Iris system for submission, renewal, and modification of protocols through this system
• Knowledge of UCSF and departmental policies for dealing with reimbursement, guidelines for research, confidentiality and HIPAA regulations, following the UCSF mission statement and purpose for research, and a clear understanding of policies and procedures on patient safety and confidentiality (electronic and hard copy medical records, patient charts, communication, etc.); knowledge of medical terminology, research policies and guidelines, database building/analysis, and data management within some of the following: REDCap
