Position Title:
Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Appointment Type:
Post Doc/Trainee

Job Description:
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Dr. Jacob D. Meyer, the Director of the Wellbeing and Exercise Laboratory at Iowa State University, invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral research fellow to work on an NIH-funded research project on new behavioral approaches to treat depression with resistance exercise training (see here ). In particular, this person will be involved in supervising the conduct of the project, including conducting, analyzing, reporting, and other requirements for a randomized, controlled trial evaluating the effect of various doses of resistance exercise in changing cerebrovascular function and treating depression. The anticipated start date is around October 1st, 2023. This position is ideal for a candidate looking for a multi-year postdoctoral position. While the ideal candidate would be involved in the entirety of the 5-year project, this position begins term-limited with an initial 1-year contract with an option to extend through the 5 years of the R01-funded project.

This position will have substantial support from other members of the laboratory (research scientist, doctoral students). We are currently running a second NIH-funded R61 clinical trial in depression with its own, separate project team. There will be considerable opportunity to actively learn from the progress and pitfalls experienced by the other project team that is roughly 6 months ahead on clinical trial activities (see here for more details on the R61). While the primary responsibility would be oversight of the resistance training project, there is substantial opportunity (with encouragement and dedicated mentorship) for manuscript writing, and eventual grant writing to further both the lab and the candidate’s own research agendas. There are multiple datasets and projects that are ready for manuscript writing related to physical activity, sedentary behavior, and mental health including questionnaires, behavioral, and blood biomarker data.

Candidates should have maturity, self-sufficiency, and the ability to make informed decisions independently.

The main responsibilities of this position include:

  • Managing project data collection, including research participant recruitment, screening, eligibility determination, disseminating research surveys, and communication with participants.
  • Supervising and/or leading study visits.
  • Managing and maintaining study-wide coordination (e.g., expenses- and budgeting-related activities).
  • Attending and leading research team meetings and providing study progress reports.
  • Managing the Data and Safety Monitoring Board progress and report creation.
  • Supervising project coordinator, research assistants, and project staff.
  • Assisting and leading results deliveries (e.g., conference abstract, manuscript).
  • Manuscript submission and publication of project- and individually-led research articles.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Kinesiology, Psychology, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Human subjects research experience
  • Strong quantitative data analysis skills (expertise in R or related software)
  • Experience working with populations with mental health conditions
  • Project management and staff coordination experience
  • Past experience working on grant-funded projects
  • Trained phlebotomist
  • Demonstrated research publication, presentation, and other dissemination from grant-funded projects

Proposed Start Date:
October 15, 2023

Proposed End Date or Length of Term:
October 14, 2024

Number of Months Employed Per Year:
