| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | Created in 1987, the University of North Carolina Injury Prevention Research Center (UNC IPRC) is one of the nation’s leading university-based injury and violence prevention research centers. IPRC’s mission is to build the field of injury and violence prevention through interdisciplinary scholarly research, and by training the next generation of injury prevention researchers and practitioners. UNC IPRC is one of the nine active centers in the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) Injury Control Research Center (ICRC) program, and one of the only two research centers to be continuously-funded as a CDC ICRC since the inception of the ICRC program. UNC IPRC is internationally known for the high quality of its interdisciplinary research and for developing innovative research methodologies. The Center conducts a wide range of research studies, with the ultimate goal of advancing the practice-relevant knowledge base for injury/violence prevention. UNC IPRC’s staff and core faculty serve as a trusted source of expert knowledge on injury/violence prevention science. The Center supports several student-led research consortiums on campus, and hosts an Injury and Violence Prevention Fellowship program. Additionally, to ensure that science on injury/violence prevention is rapidly translated into measurable and effective injury prevention actions, UNC IPRC also conducts an extensive set of community-based training and outreach activities. Many of our community-based activities are planned and implemented in collaboration with partners such as the Injury and Violence Prevention Branch (IVPB) of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Through its partnerships with IVPB and others, UNC IPRC plays a long-term leadership role in catalyzing evidence-based injury prevention activities through training and outreach to professional, governmental, and public groups. | Position Summary | The Injury Prevention Research Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a postdoctoral position. This is a full-time research position, based in Chapel Hill. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of harm reductionists with two areas of focus: conducting research on community naloxone administration, and analyzing data from a mail-in drug checking service. We seek a mixed-methods Post-Doctoral Research Associate with experience in harm reduction settings. The Post-Doctoral Research Associate’s first responsibility will be to design, conduct, and analyze data on a primarily qualitative study on how participants of harm reduction administer naloxone. Qualitative studies will be paired with drug checking samples involved in overdose to understand how actual drug exposure modifies naloxone administration. Demonstrated proficiency with qualitative coding and software are expected. Travel will be required, to approximately 4 sites around the country, for 1-2 weeks at a time. The position will work collaboratively with our team including a qualitative methodologist, administrative staff for study conduct, community liaisons, and people with lived experience. This study is funded by the US Food and Drug Administration. The second responsibility will be to analyze data from a national mail-in drug checking program run by UNC (https://streetsafe.supply). The position will be responsible for conducting quantitative analysis of existing drug checking results (N=2,500 as of August 2023). Drug trends, emerging substances of concern, health harms and other facets of the drug supply will be examined. Site visits within North Carolina are anticipated. Both projects will have ample opportunity for publications, conference travel, site visits, presentations, and news media exposure. The scientist is expected to work independently on analytical tasks, and cooperatively on design and implementation. We seek someone with high organizational and public speaking skills, the ability to work under deadlines, and conduct rigorous science in to answer high profile questions. In-person attendance on campus in Chapel Hill is expected at least two days per week, when not in the field. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | An earned doctorate in Epidemiology, Sociology, Anthropology or related field. |
| Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Candidates must have experience conducting data analyses using one or more quantitative statistical tools including SAS, Stata, R, or Python, and separately qualitative software (ATLAS.ti, NVivo, etc.). Previous experience conducting research with at least two harm reduction programs is required, and we will ask for references to those programs. |
