Position Description: | The College of Pharmacy seeks applicants for the position of Department Executive Officer (DEO) and Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science. This is a full-time, twelve-month appointment. The DEO/Chair will be appointed at the level of Professor with tenure and will have 40% effort dedicated to administration with the remaining 60% effort focused on faculty responsibilities of research, teaching, and professional service. The desired candidate will be a visionary leader that can guide innovation and continuous growth in the areas of research and science, pharmacy practice, and patient care. The next chair will have the opportunity to envision and implement a future-looking departmental model that prepares professional students for practice at the highest level of their licenses and graduate students for innovative research. The DEO/Chair is the chief academic and administrative officer for the department and is responsible for strategic planning, implementing collegiate policies and procedures, managing resources and administrative support, and leading the full range of program development and delivery within the department. The DEO/Chair represents the interests of the department and is a member of the collegiate Executive Committee and serves on the College Council. They will understand the role of the pharmacist and pharmacy’s impact on healthcare delivery. The DEO/Chair reports to the Dean of the College. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
About the Iowa College of Pharmacy Since 1885 the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy has led the way in educating pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. The College is well known for its high-quality pharmacy education, advanced practice models, patient care, drug discovery, product development, and contract manufacturing. With a new, state-of-the-art building, and the first universally designed health sciences educational facility in the U.S., Iowa Pharmacy continues to deliver a contemporary education and prepare its graduates to be healthcare leaders and scientists of the future. The College has two academic departments and offers three distinct educational programs, a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, a Doctor of Philosophy degree with an emphasis in pharmacy, and post-graduate residency programs. The College has an FDA-registered manufacturing and pharmaceutical development facility, UI Pharmaceuticals, which produces both sterile and non-sterile medications. The Doctor of Pharmacy program prides itself on interprofessional education, leadership development, excellence in education, career specialization, and direct patient care. The Doctor of Philosophy is offered in three areas: drug discovery and experimental therapeutics, health services research, and pharmaceutics. Researchers are passionate about fundamental and translation research in drug discovery, drug development, biomedical science, and advanced practice models. Post-graduate residency programs include a Community-Based Pharmacy Practice Residency and a Palliative Care and Pain Management Pharmacy Residency. Sixty faculty members teach in either (or both) academic programs, and actively engage in scientific research or related clinical practice. In addition to the base salary, this position offers an administrative stipend for the candidate while serving as DEO/Department Chair. The College of Pharmacy offers faculty a generous incentive program that is based on research productivity. This position is eligible for the incentive program. Education Requirement: | PharmD, Ph.D., or another equivalent advanced degree |
Required Qualifications: | Leadership or management experience in the academic environment. Demonstrated experience as an academician in an accredited school or college of pharmacy that includes the following:
Demonstrated experience promoting an inclusive culture in the workforce and academic environment. |
Desirable Qualifications: | Academic administrative experiences such as an assistant or associate division head, department chair managing faculty affairs, or assistant or associate dean. Evidence of professional practice experience. Experience with progressive clinical practice models. Experience partnering with an academic medical center to support a tri-partite mission of education, patient care, and research. |
