Georgetown’s Biomedical Graduate Education (BGE) is home more than 900 trainees studying in a variety of PhD, master’s, certificate, and postdoctoral programs in interdisciplinary basic and translational biomedical science, health science, data informatics, policy, and ethics, and industry science.

Job Overview

The Staff Scientist performs a variety of complex and independent activities involved in planning, organizing and conducting research and implementation studies within the overall scope of research project(s), including advanced input to the design of research methodologies, training facilitation, and data collection and analysis across projects.

They provide advanced operational and analytical support to the planning, development, and implementation of sponsored research projects. And with the capacity for independent work, they lead research projects that have various research methodologies linked to systems neuroscience; manage junior staff; and handle formal report preparation both for conference abstracts and peer review publications.

In all duties and interactions, the Junior Scientist demonstrates a capacity for independent work, including conducting experiments and performing data analysis of systems neuroscience experiments in multiple experimental model species; adapting, developing and applying research methodologies; developing and managing research projects with limited supervision; drafting and writing project reports and peer review manuscripts; and managing a team of junior research staff.

Work Interactions

Reporting directly to the Principal Investigators, while working collaboratively with other research staff, the Staff Scientist provides leadership - and at times direction - for junior research staff. 

As well, they collaborate among multi-disciplinary team members based in multiple partner international institutions, and uphold Georgetown missions through these interactions. 

Requirements and Qualifications

  • PhD in the Pharmacology, Physiology, Neuroscience or a related field
  • 4 to 7 years of work experience in a relevant field
  • Knowledge of current concepts in epilepsy and behavioral pharmacology/neuroscience and have technical subject matter expertise in both
  • Ability to undertake, and to work independently on, complex research projects (proficiency in developing, executing, and implementing research protocols)
  • Knowledge of basic statistical analytical tools
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team of investigators and research staff who have varying experience levels and background
  • Ability to prioritize, focus and achieve results in a fast paced and complex environment
  • Ability to work with colleagues and partners of diverse backgrounds and to provide attention to detail
  • Advanced organizational, interpersonal, management, oral and written communication skills
  • Work experience with the Principal Investigators
  • Flexibility and capacity for rapid response to rapidly evolving needs for the planning, development, and implementation of research projects as a valued member of a multi-disciplinary team.

Preferred Requirements and Qualifications

  • Experience in project management
  • Experience in data collection and analysis related to laboratory systems
  • Strong information technology/computer skills
