We are seeking talented and motivated applicants with training and experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health sciences, or the equivalent to join the Epidemiology Branch at the National Institutes of Health National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. A postdoctoral fellowship is available in the Perinatal and Early Life Epidemiology Group headed by Dr. Kelly Ferguson.

Early delivery and reduced fetal-to-early-childhood growth are associated with extensive later-life disease and economic costs. Research clearly indicates a role of the maternal environment during pregnancy in the origin of these outcomes, with evidence for effects of chemical exposures. However, the research in this field has primarily been limited to investigation of known chemicals. Furthermore, the mechanistic underpinnings of these relationships remain poorly understood and may be augmented with novel tools such as metabolomics. The postdoctoral fellow will collaborate on projects in this research area, working with high-dimensional chemical exposure biomarker and metabolomics data. Opportunities for research on other aspects of perinatal health and the environment are also available.

The fellow’s time will be devoted to data analysis, manuscript preparation, and career development. NIEHS postdoctoral fellows are eligible and encouraged to propose ancillary studies that can be internally funded, and to apply for K99/R00 and non-NIH research grants. The training environment is enriched by proximity and access to local l universities (e.g., University of North Carolina, NC Central University, NC State University, and Duke University). Opportunities for mentoring undergraduate and graduate students are also available. NIEHS offers comprehensive training and career development opportunities for fellows.

Applicants must have earned a doctoral degree within the past 5 years and have advanced graduate training in epidemiology, population health, environmental health sciences, biostatistics and/or statistical modeling. Experience in exposure measurement, biomarkers, GIS, genomics and/or gene/environment interactions is beneficial but not required.
