Position Summary
THIS IS A TIME-LIMITED POSITION WITH AN ESTIMATED DURATION OF 2 YEARS.
This position is for a research technician in the laboratory of Dr. Samir Kelada in the Department of Genetics in the UNC School of Medicine. The primary purpose of this position is to execute experiments using mouse and in vitro models of environmentally-induced respiratory disease, assist other lab members in conducting similar experiments, and to assist in day-to-day operation of the lab.
A large portion of effort will be dedicated to maintenance and expansion of mouse colonies, genotyping mice, exposing mice to allergens and air pollutants, and performing measurements of respiratory and immunological function after exposure. The candidate will also be involved in maintaining cell culture models for experiments as part of a team. The candidate will be given protocols and expected to adhere to them assiduously. The second goal will be to assist in the maintenance of common lab areas and equipment, ordering reagents other materials.
The successful candidate with work with postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduate students and other researchers in the Kelada lab. The candidate will contribute to the training of new members in the lab regarding standard protocols. The candidate will help ensure that the lab adheres to EHS and IACUC guidelines. As such, record keeping and organization of samples will also be an important task. Finally, communicating on a routine basis with Dr. Kelada in person and digitally will be essential to success.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Prior work with maintaining and expanding mouse colonies.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Some experience with cell culture; and some experience with principles of genetic analysis.
- An undergraduate/bachelor degree relevant to the scope of work
- Prior work exposing mice to substances through the respiratory tract, nucleic acid isolation, genotyping by PCR, gene expression analysis by qRT-PCR, measurement of protein expression by ELISA

The candidate will be required to perform lab tasks and procedures that involve physical dexterity.
