Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

 

The Workflow and Ecosystem Services group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Research Scientist to add to our team. In this position, you will research workflow solutions for integrating advanced data science techniques (simulation, machine learning/artificial intelligence, statistical data analysis) across the edge-to-cloud-to-HPC continuum at leadership-class scale. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated researcher with a growth mindset. Prior experience with scientific workflows and HPC is required. To be successful in this role, you must be team-oriented and demonstrate a drive for self-learning. This position is part of the Advanced Technologies Section within the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) Division at ORNL. NCCS has a deep legacy in High Performance Computing (HPC) operating leadership-class systems, deploying the world’s first exascale system (Frontier) and largest parallel file system.

Our Organization:

This position is part of the Advanced Technologies Section within the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) Division. The Advanced Technologies Section offers scientific, technical, operational, and thought leadership by developing, hardening, and deploying solutions for compute and data intensive computing environments. The NCCS provides an innovative computational and data science infrastructure, coupled with dedicated technical and scientific professionals, to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering advances across a broad range of fields. NCCS hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, one of DOE’s National User Facilities. NCCS has deployed the U.S.’s first Exascale system.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Improve workflow solutions by conducting R&D for DOE facilities aimed at deploying advanced data science techniques (simulation, machine learning/artificial intelligence, statistical data analysis) across the edge-to-cloud-to-HPC continuum.

  • Assist with developing new research directions relevant to OLCF mission and the overall health of the group.

  • Collaborate with scientists outside of the laboratory to advance the scientific mission of the group, laboratory, the Department of Energy and other sponsors.

  • Write peer-reviewed papers and technical reports for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.

  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in topics covering automated workflow management, HPC, Edge, and cloud computing.

  • Engage with teams across ORNL.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a Ph.D. in computer science or a related discipline.
  • An established track record of research in an area relevant to one or more areas of expertise of the group.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior postdoctoral research experience preferred.
  • Experience with machine orchestration methods (automated workflows), and HPC.
  • Proven experience with scientific and artificial intelligence workflows on HPC systems.
  • Proven experience leading R&D projects.
  • Proven experience leading research proposals for government funding.
  • Ability to learn new technologies.
  • Resourcefulness, troubleshooting aptitude and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and strong personal motivation.
  • Exceptional communication skills, ability to communicate effectively with internal and external collaborators and ability to work in a team environment.
