Postdoctoral Research Associate - Effect of Uniaxial Strain on Hybrid Magnets

Job Description

Requisition Id 11388

Overview:

As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year history of solving the nation’s biggest problems. We have a dedicated and creative staff of over 6,000 people! Our vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization, as well as to ensure ORNL is recognized as a workplace of choice. These elements are critical for enabling the execution of ORNL’s broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy, environment, and security solutions for the nation.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will reside in the Triple-Axis Spectrometer group in the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD), Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). NScD operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out more than 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL, please go to this link: http://neutrons.ornl.gov

As part of our team, you will engage in investigating the exotic quantum phenoma in novel multiferroic and 2D hybrid magnets applying both experimental and theoretical modeling methods. Our main goals are: (1) investigate the physical property of the material applying neutron scattering techniques under various conditions including uniaxial strain using instruments at both HFIR and SNS, (2) perform data analysis using software for magnetic/nuclear structure refinement and INS modeling, and (3) combine with DFT simulations to model/interpret neutron scattering data to advance our understanding of quantum materials. This work will be conducted with close interactions and collaborations with other scientists within Neutron Scattering Division, with opportunity to work with collaborators in a stimulating multidisciplinary environment across ORNL.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform research utilizing neutron scattering techniques to understand quantum materials
  • Publish scientific papers and present results from this research at national and international meetings as appropriate
  • Contribute to the development of uniaxial strain capability for neutron scattering methods and other relevant neutron scattering techniques for quantum material study
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in condensed matter physics, material science or a related field completed within the last 5 years

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in neutron scattering and/or X-ray scattering methods to study quantum materials
  • Experience with Rietveld and/or inelastic analysis of Neutron/X-ray data, programming experience with data reduction/analysis/modeling
  • A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
