Summary of Job Duties:

The Principal Staff Scientist will provide oversight, management and supervision of all laboratory personnel and projects with regard to the needs of each investigator and each project. This position works with outside agencies (e.g., NIH, research consortia and collaborators) and inside regulatory agencies (e.g., UAMS offices of human research, animal research and regulatory compliance) to ensure accurate documentation, workflow, reporting, accountability, and performance of all contracts, studies and protocols. The Principal Staff Scientist will provide direct oversight of hours and workflow of each employee or trainee (research assistants, research aides, students, residents, and fellows) in the laboratory. This position will oversee laboratory supply inventory and ordering with cost assignments to appropriate funding sources. Reports directly to the principal investigator on the above duties and works closely with the research manager to ensure efficiency and productivity.

Qualifications:

Doctoral degree and 10+ years of relevant experience; including significant project management experience, personnel supervision, and editorial and scientific contributions to grants required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral fellowship experience.

  • Experience with mouse models of lung and mouse surgery.


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and conducts a variety of assays within the Varisco Laboratory including: cell culture and maintenance, immunologic based assays, molecular biology-based procedures and protocols, immunofluorescence and microscopy assays, animal studies, human lung tissue processing and culture, maintenance of laboratory logs and inventories, and the performance of day-to-day laboratory procedures.

  • Procurement, handling and preparation of human lung tissue from NIH National Resource Center.

  • Collects & maintains human lung slices, airway epithelial and smooth muscle cell cultures.

  • Performs laboratory animal ordering and monitoring.

  • Performs statistical analyses & evaluation of data.

  • Assists in the development of research grant proposals and manuscripts.

  • Gathers information to help develop, evaluate and modify study protocols and procedures to streamline experiments.

  • Keeps detailed notes of experiments & activities and record in the electronic laboratory notebook.

  • Trouble-shoots and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment.

  • Serves as consultant for other laboratories.

  • Serves as laboratory safety coordinator and attends mandatory safety meetings.

  • Keeps up-to-date lab safety manual and chemical inventories.

  • Trains lab employees on safety and ensure their training is current.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.
