Summary of Job Duties:

An Associate Staff Scientist position will work in the IDeA National Resource for Quantitative Proteomics in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (https://biochemistry.uams.edu/). Applicant will work in the National Resource team to process user samples and maintain operational equipment. Duties will include maintenance of equipment within the resource (mass spectrometers and liquid chromatography systems), preparation of samples for processing, conducting quality control procedures on all instrumentation, assisting in the development of new workflows to be implemented in the resource, and performing experiments as requested by resource leadership.

Qualifications:

Doctoral degree and 0 – 5 years of relevant experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of protein purification and/or preparation, western blot, immunoprecipitation, cell culture, and other molecular biology techniques.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to maintain and use literature databases.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Thermo Orbitrap mass spectrometers.

  • Ability to use proteomics database software such as Scaffold, Skyline, or similar software packages.

  • Postdoctoral fellowship experience preferred.


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures continuous, reliable operation of mass spectrometers and liquid chromatography systems.

  • Manages service contracts and scheduling non-routine maintenance with instrument manufacturers.

  • Coordinates instrument use efficiently among multiple research projects.

  • Prepares and processes samples submitted to the resource.

  • Trains and supervises laboratory staff.

  • Maintains inventory records, (4) lab safety and institutional compliance,

  • Develops protocols and writing standard operating procedures.

  • Reviews scientific literature to monitor new proteomics techniques and approaches.

  • Assists in the design, implementation of novel, cutting-edge proteomics techniques, with the ultimate goal of adding these techniques as a billable service through the National Resource.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.
