Position Highlights

The Department of Biosystems Engineering invites applicants for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate I. This position is for the Biosensors Laboratory (PI: Jeong-Yeol Yoon) and will involve the development of environmental biosensors. The incumbent of this position will design, fabricate, and evaluate various paper microfluidic-based biosensors coupled with smartphone- or Raspberry Pi-based monitoring and machine learning (ML) classification techniques. The developed sensors will detect various MNPs (micro/nanoplastics) and PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) from aerosols and field water samples. The developed sensing principle will also be used to remediate MNPs and PFAS from the environment. Experience in and comprehensive understanding of environmental science and engineering, coding (mainly in Python), paper membranes, as well as knowledge of MNP and PFAS, are required.

This appointment is for one year and may be extended contingent upon additional funding and performance.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design and fabricate the assay platforms.
  • Prepare samples.
  • Conduct the assays and troubleshoot the platform and procedure.
  • Analyze data.
  • Write a draft report, presentation, and journal article.
  • Attend weekly team and laboratory meetings.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of MNP and PFAs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Applicants must have, as of the beginning date of the appointment, a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering or Biosystems Engineering.
  • Prior experience in Coding (Python) and in paper membrane.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong journal publications, both in quality and quantity.
  • Experience with paper microfluidics and machine learning.
