We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral chemist/engineer to develop novel materials for PFAS sorption. The postdoctoral associate will support the research and development of PFAS sorbents in the lab as well as transition them to the field while working closely with a private client to ensure project success.

Background. The Duke University Center for Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Infectious Disease (WaSH-AID) is a collaborative translational research team working closely with academic, non-profit and private industry partners around the world to facilitate the development and sustainable deployment of novel technology-based solutions for critical health and environmental challenges.

Roles and Responsibilities. The ideal candidate has a PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental engineering or other combination of background and experience with a strong background in wet chemistry and research. The candidate will have practical experience in 1) materials synthesis and characterization, 2) experimental design, and 3) ability to work within defined timelines to perform high quality research for external clients. Prior experience with water/wastewater treatment, membrane filtration technologies, adsorption, materials development and characterization, PFAS, and/or electrochemistry is highly desirable.

Primary responsibilities for the position will include: • Designing and performing experiments to advance the mission of the Center • Collaborating with other Center researchers and field partners to facilitate transfer of technology from the lab into field testing and/or to commercialization • Commitment to laboratory safety and scientific recordkeeping • Preparation of scientific data for project reports, intellectual property filings, publication in peer-reviewed journals, and/or presentation at seminars and conferences • Ability to manage effort and timelines across multiple projects simultaneously • Strong communication skills • A desire to work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment

This position will be supported by projected contracts in late 2023 for 1 year. Options for promotion to a full employee position are dependent on performance and continuation of funding.
