Job Details:

The Department of Asian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin invite applications for a postdoctoral fellow in Japanese Studies. 

The postdoctoral fellow will teach one course per long semester (Fall and Spring), work closely with undergraduate students affiliated with an innovative Digital Humanities space, JapanLab (https://www.utjapanlab.com/ ), participate fully in the rich intellectual life at the University of Texas at Austin, and receive support as they work to turn their dissertation into a book.

Generously supported by the Japan Foundation and the College of Liberal Arts at UT, the position will be for one year, from September 2023 to August 2024. In addition to teaching a 1/1 course load that includes some Digital Humanities content, the postdoctoral fellow will work alongside a team of three or four undergraduate students to design a fully functional digital project. Past projects involve developing fully functional video games (https://www.utjapanlab.com/ghosts ), online board games, and digital mapping projects, but the purpose will be to manage the students rather than to execute the project themselves. 

The postdoctoral fellow will collaborate closely with the Directors of JapanLab: Dr. Kirsten Cather in the Department of Asian Studies, and Dr. Adam Clulow and Dr. Mark Ravina in the Department of History.


Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with Directors of JapanLab

  • Teach a 1/1 courseload

  • Work alongside a team of three or four undergraduate students to design a fully functional digital project




Required Qualifications

PhD in Japanese Studies or related field received no more than three years prior to the start date.


Preferred Qualifications

Interest in the Digital Humanities.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
