The School of Communication and Information (SC&I) on the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus houses a dynamic community of scholars who conduct engaged research and teach in the areas of communication, information science, media studies, information technology, journalism, librarianship, organizational and health communication, public relations, and other professional practice areas. Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Student Counselor II for the School of Communication and Information – Dean’s Office. This recruitment position participates in planning and executing the comprehensive plan for recruiting a highly qualified and diverse pool of students to the academic programs of the School of Communication and Information, with a focus on graduate programs.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Coaches and advises prospective students.
  • Helps manage data and communications through a CRM.
  • Helps plan and execute events such as information sessions and open houses.
  • Represents the school at conferences and other appropriate venues.
  • Works closely with the school’s Marketing/Communications team to help assure that the advertising and marketing for the school and the recruitment efforts are aligned.
  • Participates as a full member of the Office of Student Services.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, counseling, education, social work, or a related area.
  • Two years of relevant experience in higher education which may include recruiting, advising, instruction, student support services, or marketing and communication initiatives.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle complex situations with diplomacy.
  • Computer fluency.
  • Experience with data analysis.
  • Strong commitment to providing outstanding student services.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree.

  • Office software including word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.
  • RUTAdmin for access to student records, rosters, grades, etc.
  • University web applications that enable similar information access to RUTadmin.

  • Sakai, including administrative back-end as well as user front-end functions.
  • SC&I web applications including Drupal and web support software.
  • Open web applications such as those used by Amazon and publishers.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Special Conditions
  • May have 20% travel, of which some will be in the tri-state area but off Rutgers’ campus.
  • Requires some evening work on a semi-regular basis (i.e., a few times a month), and some weekend work (less than once a month).
  • Must be able to life boxes and other material up to 15 lbs. and set up rooms and displays for events.

Under Policy 100.3.1 Immunization Policy for Covered Individuals , if employment will commence during Flu Season, Rutgers University may require certain prospective employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.
