The Computational Coupled Physics research group in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division (CSED), Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate with expertise in physics-based modeling and parallel computing.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Work within a committed team of scientists to develop and advance scientific computational tools for supercomputers.
  • Develop and implement algorithms for improved computational efficiency and scalability.
  • Apply advanced computing capabilities to solve scientific challenges within ORNL.
  • Interact with industrial partners, other research organizations, and universities related to advanced manufacturing technologies, and product, systems, and materials development.
  • Present and report research results and lead the publication of scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Developing and leveraging existing numerical models to investigate various applied problems, with a focus on problems related to advanced manufacturing processes (such as additive manufacturing). 
  • developing routines to run scientific computing codes for the world’s largest supercomputers, as well as the development of codes and workflows to meet new application-driven challenges.
  • Detailed research tasks related to running scientific computational models and working closely with other researchers to apply these capabilities to solve scientific problems relevant to the US Department of Energy.
  • Interact with a diverse group of researchers across ORNL to solve challenging, interdisciplinary problems, and to effectively communicate with outside entities, including university and industrial partners.
  • Interact with computational modeling and applied research at ORNL user facilities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in materials science, mathematics, computer science, or a related field completed within the last 5 years.
  • Experience with parallel computing techniques.
  • Background of research in materials science.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluent in python and C++.
  • An excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Motivated and safety conscious.
  • Ability to work with a measure of autonomy and a willingness to participate creatively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time and to independently set priorities and to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

 

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
