Job Duties:


The Office of Licensing and Commercialization has the goal of translating early-stage innovations into impact through research, entrepreneurship, and commercialization. The Licensing Analyst will learn and perform various aspects of business opportunity assessment, intellectual property strategy, business intelligence, market analysis, negotiation tactics, and agreement review. This position is open to individuals who have knowledge of, and experience in, invention and innovation processes, technology transfer, entrepreneurism, and have a willingness to use these skills to enhance university commercialization activities related to faculty research discoveries.
Licensing Analyst will perform the following activities:

Experiential Activities (60%)
  • Learning policies, procedures and regulations concerning technology transfer practices and intellectual property protection.
  • Scouting and assessing innovations for marketability and intellectual property protection.
  • Providing assessment reports to innovators and office staff.
  • Developing business strategies to advance novel research discoveries.
  • Conducting customer interviews to confirm market need.
  • Supporting the ECU Patent Committee.
  • Serving as an advocate for innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialization.
  • Networking with internal and external partners

Innovation Acceleration Activities (20%)
  • Identifying consultants, contract research organizations and/or third parties that can assist in translating innovations.
  • Assisting innovators with developing prototype(s) and/or experimental proof of concept.
  • Managing access to Licensing & Commercialization equipment and/or resources.
  • Providing review of commercialization grant proposals.

Instructional Activities (10%)
  • Project lead/manager for special programs. Special programs may include software implementation and oversight, conferences, events, student mentoring and/or other projects supported by the Office of Licensing and Commercialization. Duties may include preparing advertising materials, developing course materials, mentoring, operations management, and outcome assessment.

Data Management Activities (10%)
  • Entering and tracking invention disclosures and agreements.
  • Analyzing and preparing reports regarding licensing.

The Licensing Analyst is expected to demonstrate compliance with established federal, state, and university guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.

Minimum Education/Experience:


Post-Baccalaureate degree in a STEM discipline required; for candidates demonstrating professional-level background in technology transfer, will accept an undergraduate degree and 2 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. Technology transfer experience would be related to managing the flow of research innovation, disclosures, patents, trademarks, copyrights and other aspects of technology commercialization.

The Office of Research, Economic Development and Engagement (REDE) is responsible for research policy and integrity, research administration and contract negotiations across ECU for both the main campus and the health sciences campus. The office directs new intellectual enterprises, including technology transfer. Industry, military and government agency research partnerships and community engagement and economic development activities across the eastern half of North Carolina are also managed by the office. REDE is responsible for the following units under its umbrella: Office of Research Administration, Office of Human Subjects Protections, Office of Research Integrity & Compliance, Office of Research Development, Office of National Security & Industry Initiatives, Office of Economic & Community Engagement, Office of Innovation & New Ventures, Office of Licensing & Commercialization, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, Office of Undergraduate Research, and the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee.
