Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, has an immediate need for a full-time Senior Instructional Assistant - Automotive Technology in the Applied Technologies Department, Gudelsky Institute. The work schedule is  2nd shift. This is a non-bargaining, non-exempt, grade 25 position. Non-exempt positions are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Automotive Technology is a technical training program. This program has a facility designated “secure” (classrooms, lab, storage area, audio visual area, supplies room and tool room) which must be secured, organized inventoried and maintained with new equipment purchases and changing utilization patterns.

The program  uses many types of tools (hand tools, power tools, motorized heavy equipment, computer diagnostic tools, and specialty repair tools) which have to be calibrated, programmed, repaired, and demonstrated. Instruction involves a fleet of program owned vehicles (25 + cars/trucks) which must be serviced and repaired. 

The program requires clerical support, an agent responsible for reporting budget needs to the coordinator, and an individual responsible for purchasing / requisitioning all required parts, supplies, media, aids, service information, tools, equipment, repair services and contractual agreements.

 

 

 

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Set-up and break down of automotive laboratory practical exercises for each class, including vehicles, tools, equipment and demonstrations as required by each instructor. Assist students and instructor in the laboratory when complexity of practical exercises or the use of multiple facilities necessitates more than one instructor. Evaluate lab exercises and makes recommendations for their modification and improvement. Provide instructors with fabricated models, and “bugged” (introduce a controlled intentional failure) vehicles when needed
  • Maintain all automotive diagnostic test equipment and specialized tools. This includes repair, calibration, programming, updating, search new tool suppliers, research equipment and tools for purchase, collect quotes/bids, purchase all new equipment and tools used in the Automotive Program to meet curriculum demands and changes. Recommend future purchases for budget preparation.
  • Maintain vehicles currently owned by the automotive program (Auto Tech Fleet). This includes diagnosis and repair, parting vehicle assemblies for future use in the lab and classroom. Acquiring new and used vehicles through donation. Dismantling and removing vehicles from the grounds when so instructed (paring down the fleet).
  • Maintain inventory of laboratory disposable materials and supplies.
  • Maintain areas designated as “secure” where building maintenance personnel are denied access; generally, look after the security of the automotive area including classrooms, lab, storage areas, tool room, audio visual supply room, secure corporate training classroom and lab areas and grounds used for fleet storage.
  • Disassembly of training units (i.e., engines transmissions, transaxles, transfer cases) no longer used for instruction. Recycle of all metals
  • Interview, train, supervise and evaluate student assistantship programs
  • Collection and proper disposal of all hazardous waste.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience providing understanding of the field.
  • Two years of experience using common automotive shop tools and popular service equipment, such as, Brake Lathes, Wheel Balancers, Alignment Equipment, Scopes, Scan Tools, Engine Exhaust Gas Analyzers.
  • Knowledge and understanding of vehicle systems.
  • Experience with performing automotive service/repairs.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use office applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, etc., and internet and Windows-based applications.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize work and to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ASE Certifications
  • EPA Section 609 Refrigerant Recovery/Recycling License
  • Experience in an academic instructional laboratory related to Automotive Technology.

 

Hiring Range $27.68 to $35.98 per hour. Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity.  Please include a complete resume including all relevant and related work experience.
