We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on applied research in the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to value-added products using molten salts.  This position resides in the Nanomaterials Chemistry Group in the Separations & Polymer Chemistry Section, Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

As part of our team, you will focus on the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to value-added products such as graphite using molten salts.  Part of the effort will involve scaling up and optimizing the molten salt electrochemical process and characterizing the resulting products.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Synthesize and purify molten salts.
  • Conduct electrochemistry experiments in molten salt media.
  • Assist in the scale up of the electrochemical conversion process.
  • Characterize carbon products resulting from the larger scale conversion process.
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in electrochemistry, physical or inorganic chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the synthesis and purification of molten salts.
  • In depth understanding of electrochemistry related to molten salts.
  • Familiarity with the following techniques is a plus:  X-ray diffraction, Raman and IR spectroscopy, UV/Vis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory. 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

 

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
